4PAWS Rescue is an all volunteer organization always in need of new volunteers. Our greatest need is for foster homes and for adoption fair handlers. Fosters and handlers need to be in or near Colorado Springs, where our weekly adoption fairs are held.
Our handlers come to adoption fairs on the weekends, usually a bit before 11:00 AM and stay until a bit after 3:00 PM. The handler will be given a dog to hold, told about its personality and traits, and talk to people who ask about the dog. We keep our dogs on leashes at the adoption fairs, unless we have a litter of small puppies that can be kept in an enclosure or playpen. There is always at least one board member present to do paperwork and answer any questions that the handler can't answer. It is always nice to have an extra handler or two so that we can take breaks, maybe get a bite to eat when it isn't chaotic, and do paperwork for potential adopters. We are usually at the Southgate Petsmart in Colorado Springs. Once or twice a month, we go to the PetCo on Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard in Colorado Springs. Our adoption fairs are usually on Saturdays, and we occasionally go to a location other than the two mentioned.
Our foster homes care for one of our dogs in their own home until it can be placed. The average length of stay is 3-4 weeks, although some are adopted more quicly and some take a bit longer. We will work around the foster person's schedule (vacation, etc.) but need as much lead time as possible so we can be sure to have another foster home available. 4PAWS pays medical expenses for the dogs and will provide dog food. There are no set rules as to what environment the foster person must have, but we do like to know the situation so we can put the right dog in the right temporary home.
