A Foster Care volunteer plays a crucial role in the rescue of dogs and cats from animal control facilities where they are facing immediate death. A Foster Care volunteer takes a dog or cat into their home, socializes it and provides a stable, home environment until the pet finds a new permanent home through internet adoption pages and mobile adoption events usually held every weekend. The number of foster care volunteers who are available to take dogs or cats determines the number of pets saved, in conjunction with the resources of the rescue group. Right now, local rescue groups do not have enough Foster Care volunteers because there are still dogs being killed simply because the cage space is needed for new dogs coming into animal control.
Each rescue group has their own policies on foster care and some groups provide more financial and training support than others. Some groups ask that you be able to bring your foster pet to mobile adoption sites.
1 - People who are already skilled in dog training (i.e. they have been through dog obedience training classes with another dog and have been successful in the training) or people who want to learn dog obedience training skills
2 - People who are skilled cat caretakers or who want to learn. They may specialize in bottle feeding, socializing ferals, medication, scratching post re-training, resocialization
3 - People who have the time and commitment necesary to devote to ongoing and regularly scheduled, consistent training, exercising, playing, grooming
4 - People who have the requisite space as determined by the pet, and who do not have landlord problems or who own their own domicile
5 - People who fully realize that the training and socialization a pet receives in their care will make the pet much more adoptable than when it was rescued from the pound and who want to perfect their skills as they prepare one pet after another once each one is adopted. People who realize the skill of their foster pet depends on their level of skill in training.
