Who We Are

Chessie Rescue VA, Inc. is an all volunteer, non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing Chesapeake Bay Retrievers in need in Virginia and placing them in permanent, loving homes. We support and encourage the efforts of clubs, organizations and individuals to rescue adoptable, purebred or mixed Chesapeake Bay Retrievers from animal shelters, owners who can no longer care for their dogs in a responsible way, or strays found wandering at large. Our goal is to educate the public on responsible dog ownership including spaying and neutering of pets, and to inform prospective Chessie owners of the special qualities, characteristics and requirements of our breed before they acquire a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

All donations are tax deductible due to our incorporating with 501(c)(3) status in May of '03. However, we have been successfully saving chessies in need in our area since 1998. We need your help in order to keep helping those that need us. Please consider signing up as a volunteer or donating financially to help the chessies in our care.

Rescue Process

We get our CBRs in need from local shelters and owners surrendering their dogs. We do not have a shelter or kennel available to us so we foster our rescues in our homes. We foster the dog usually for 8 weeks before placing them up for adoption. We like to learn as much as we can about the animal so we can make the best possible placement. All of our dogs are evaluated for health and temperament. They are brought up to date on all their shots and spayed or neutered before placing (health allowing).

Owners wishing to surrender their dog to rescue are ASKED to have them altered and brought up to date on all their shots. Owners must also sign a relinquishment of rights contract as well as a medical release.

Adoption Process

Adopters are required to fill out an adoption application, or apply via phone or email. We will then set up a time when a volunteer can come and visit with you and your family. This visit helps us determine if the breed is right for you and if so, to make the best possible match when placing a dog in your home. After a successful homevisit and the proper match is found, you will then need to sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee.
