UPDATE:

Norman has had his surgery and is doing as well as can be expected. He is lucky to have a foster mom who is a vet and can do his therapy and follow ups. He did well with his recovery, and seems happy doing as much as he can physically do. He does have to take meds for pain, and will need some arthroscopic work done in the future.

THANKS to all who donated to help Norman--we really appreciate it. Although we tried to thank everyone personally, some e-mail address came back to us and we were not able to do so.

Summertime Alert for Dogs Who Swim

Do you throw away your aluminum cans? If you do, would you consider donating them to us? We will gladly pick them up if you live in the Appleton area and would like to help us out in that way. Just give us a call at 954-0795 and let us know when and where to pick them up! We would sure appreciate it!.

OWNER SURRENDER POLICY: Shelter dogs will always be taken into rescue before owner surrender dogs. Please do not call us and threaten to take the dog to a shelter if we cannot take the dog into rescue that minute-you will have to do what you have to do under those circumstances. It takes time to coordinate a foster home and evaluation to bring a dog into rescue. If you know you are moving in 2 months-please don't wait until the week before to try to re-home the dog. All owner surrender dogs will need to be current on their vaccines and have a HW test before being considered for admission to rescue. All medical records must accompany the dog. We will also be contacting the current veterinarian for any history of medical issues/aggression etc. All dogs will need to go through a strict evaluation for temperament before being considered for admission. This will be done in your home and not in a neutral area. We will be checking for stranger aggression, food guarding, food aggression, dog to dog aggression. We will also check with the veterinarian for history of aggression/bites. We may also check with local authorities to see if there has been a bite complaint if we deem it necessary. Aggressive/unpredictable dogs will not be considered for this program-we do not take dogs with a bite history or aggression to people. If your reason for re-homing your dog is that you don't want it to bite your child/children-do not assume that we will take it to bite someone else's children-we will not. We reserve the right to deny access to rescue any dog we feel to be a danger to people and a detriment to our program .

Breast Cancer in Dogs

Breast cancer: Estrogen is one of the primary causes of canine breast cancer, the most common malignant tumor in dogs. Animals that are spayed prior to one year of age very rarely develop this malignancy. However, it is very common in unspayed females. The chances of reaching 10 years of age without developing this potentially fatal tumor is less than 11% in some breeds with normal hormone production. If the dog is spayed later in life, it may still decrease the chances for this cancer to develop. The best way to insure your dog is spared from breast cancer is to have an OHE performed before her first heat
