Shorty is a 4 year old Bassett, Beagle, Dachshund mix, who was owner surrender. Shorty’s family is going to be having a baby soon so Shorty had to go. It’s too bad that he wasn’t thought of more as a family member. We wouldn’t just get rid of a family member would we? Shame on Shorty's family. Shorty gets along well with all other dogs and loves to romp and play with his foster siblings. He would love to be in a home with older children. He would love to go for walks, or would be happy to sit right beside you to snuggle. He is housetrained and knows some basic commands. Shorty is crate trained, but would love to share your bed. This little guy is a joy to be around and would bring many smiles to a family willing to love him and to be loved in return. A fenced in yard would be great, but it’s not mandatory. .. If you are interested in more information about him, you can contact us via email by Clicking on "email adoption organization" located under my contact info. If you are interested in adopting Shorty, our on line application is located at the top of our home page.
Please no applications with children under 12 years of age. The adoption fee for Shorty is $150.00. As a non-profit organization the adoption fee helps to defray our expenses for the dog’s food and veterinary care. NO OUT OF STATE ADOPTIONS PLEASE.
PLEASE NOTE: We greatly appreciate the inquires from out-of-state animal lovers, however, we don't do out-of-state adoptions due to the visits/personal meetings required to insure that the best possible match is made for each precious animal in our care. Shelters across the country are filled beyond capacity with mellow, older dogs, all patiently waiting for another chance. Are you looking for a devoted and loving canine companion who is mature and well behaved? Want a pet that will fit right into your busy lifestyle without major interruptions to your schedule? Then instead of taking on a puppy, who will require frequent feedings, potty breaks, and house training, consider adopting an adult/older dog. There are many benefits to adopting a senior dog.
1. What You See Is What You Get! By adopting an older dog you get a known entity. You get to see exactly what the personality of the dog is. With a puppy, you don't quite know what the personality is going to be.
2. No Chewed Up Shoes! You won't have to deal with the baby-type behaviors that puppies often exhibit. Adopting an older dog is ideal for working people or busy families who don't want the hassle of dealing with an energetic puppy. The first year of a dog's life can be very high energy; older dogs are calmer. For people who want a more laid back kind of pet, an older dog is a wise choice.
3. Usually Housebroken. Older dogs may already be housebroken but if not, they're easier to train than a puppy because they have more bladder control. Young puppies have to be let out frequently throughout the day, whereas an older dog can hold it for longer.
4. The Adult Dog is Often Already Spayed or Neutered.
5. Use to Being Part of a Family Unit. Many older dogs are given up by their previous families due to a change in life circumstances, such as a move or the birth of a child. This means they are displaced pack members. Because of this, these dogs are "eager to please" the new family they join. Older dogs just fit right in. They are very willing to accept any new pattern for a new leash on life.
6. Sleeps Through The Night. An older dog has learned to sleep all night along with the family, which means that your sleep won't be interrupted.
7. Usually Leash-Trained and Car-Trained. Older dogs that have been part of families typically know how to walk on a leash and have good car manners.
8. You'll be Saving a Life. This is perhaps the most compelling reason for giving an adult/older dog a home -- because there are so many more of them in need. Adult/Older dogs, especially those at shelters, are subject to misunderstandings that make it hard for them to find new homes - misunderstandings like they're all rejects or have behavior problems. But these myths simply are not true! Adult dogs [in shelters] have come upon hard times, so they're grateful to be adopted. They bond very quickly with their new family.
NOTE: Giving a dog a home is a lifetime commitment. Please give this fact serious consideration before making your decision to adopt. Don't take their commitment to you lightly - we have seen far too many dogs that are totally devastated when they are suddenly without their beloved person/family. They are confused and deeply affected. You are their everything
"I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. "God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly. I have done something," He replied. "I created you."~Jim Willis
