Our Adoptable Pet List

Our Featured Pet...

This handsome fellow is Gus. He is an absolute love bug. Gus gets along well with other dogs, especially all the little beagles here at the shelter. He loves long leisurely walks in the sunshine. This mature, laid back boy needs a permanent home to settle into forever! Click here for his picture.

Who We Are

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Fredericksburg was founded in 1943. Its current name is "The SPCA of Fredericksburg, Inc." (hereinafter "SPCA"). The SPCA has been at its present location, 1523 Olde William Street, since 1945. A second building was constructed at the site in 1990 to provide additional space for homeless and unwanted animals. The shelter can presently hold 20 dogs and 32 cats. This space is often extended to hold more animals.

The SPCA is a private non-profit charitable institution receiving no county, state or federal funding and having no relationship to any city or county operated animal shelter. Less than 3% of our budget is received from the City of Fredericksburg. We rely solely on individual and corporate donations and fundraising events. Contrary to popular belief, there is no national organization of SPCAs that provides funding or any other type of financial or organizational support. We are an entirely independent and self-supporting institution.

Adopting a friend

Our adoption process consists of an application form. The application form takes 24 to 48 hours to review. All applicants are phoned and advised whether their application has been approved. We reserve the right, without explanation, to refuse any application. If approved, you will be advised when you can pick up your new pet. This may depend on whether your new pet is already spayed or neutered, requires medical attention, etc. All animals will be spayed/neutered prior to leaving the SPCA

Cost

The cost is $90 for a mixed breed, $105 for a pure bred and $45 for an animal 7 years or older. The adoption fee includes spaying/neutering, vaccines (including rabies shot), microchip, personalized ID tag, SPCA tag, free physical exam from a local vet, ongoing behavior help & a gift bag.
