Who We Are

What is the Whitney Foundation? The Whitney Foundation is companion animal rescue and adoption organization. The Foundation was founded in 1997. There are no administrative costs associated with this effort. All of the funds available to the Foundation are dedicated to saving animals lives. The activities associated with the operation of the Foundation are conducted by volunteers - no paid employees.Where do the dogs come from?Animals accepted for adoption from the Foundation have either been abandoned or are unwanted. Acceptance is based on availability of foster homes or the Owner is willing to keep dog until adopted. How does it work?Once a dog is brought into the Foundation, he is cared for until a permanent home is found. The animals are brought up to date on vaccinations, tested for heartworm and intestinal parasites, groomed, spayed or neutered, and treated for any medical concerns. Potential adopters come to the Foundation either by word of mouth or by advertisement in local newspapers. A telephone interview is conducted and based on that an individual interested in adopting will make arrangements to meet the animal. This usually happens at the home of the foster care provider. The foster care provider or adoption counselor will evaluate the adoption match and will be available for detailed questions regarding the pet. If the applicant had a previous pet, they must provide a veterinary reference and, if that is satisfactory, a home visit will be arranged. If the home visit is successful the applicant will complete an adoption contract and arrange to pick up their new pet.

Adopting a friend

What does it cost to adopt a dog from the Whitney Foundation? Spayed or neutered adult dogs have a $250.00 adoption fee. Puppies have a $100.00 adoption fee if unspayed or neutred. Any funds received in excess of the adoption fee will be considered a donation. What happens after the adoption? A volunteer or the foster care provider will be available for questions or concerns regarding the pet's adjustment into the new home. There will be a follow-up call a few days after the adoption and again in a few weeks. Volunteers are always glad to receive progress reports (and pictures!) at any time.
