Who We Are

Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society is located in Gloucester County, Virginia and has been the only open animal shelter in the seven surrounding counties since 1976.

We are open Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat. from 11 am to 4 pm and Sunday (no intake) from 1 pm to 4 pm. We are closed on Wednesday.

Adopting a Friend

Our adoption application is available online by clicking here. Be sure to complete the application on the front and the back. We will also gladly mail you an application or you can pick one up the shelter. Once you complete it fax it to us at (804) 694-5136, mail it to us, or drop it by the shelter.

Next, we review your application. We then conduct a veterinary check and a landlord check (if you rent). We reserve the right to conduct a house check.

The processing and approval or denial of the application takes 2-3 days.

Please call or visit us between 11 AM and 4 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, or between 1 PM and 4 PM on Sundays if you have any questions. We are closed on Wednesdays. Volunteering

There is always plenty to do at the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, and that's why we love our volunteers! Volunteers can help do everything, from walking dogs to helping with events to socializing kittens! From Gloucester Courthouse: At the light at Route 14 and 17 Bypass turn onto Route 14 (this will be a right or left depending on which direction you are heading on 17 Bypass). Travel approximately 4 1/2 - 5 miles. Take a left onto Route 661 (Rang Tang Road). Travel approximately 1/2 - 1 mile up Route 661. The shelter is located on the righthand side.

From Mathews: Travel towards Gloucester Courthouse on Route 14. Approximately 1 mile after passing Route 3 on the right you'll pass a nursery (Tidewater Tropicals) on the righthand side. Slow down - around the next curve you will take a right onto Route 661 (Rang Tang Road). Travel approximately 1/2 - 1 mile up Route 661. The shelter is located on the righthand side.
