Our Featured Pet...

In these hard economic times, and adoptions being almost non-existent, it's hard to choose one pet to feature. All of our cats and dogs deserve to be featured. Some have been with us many months. If you are looking for a small, people friendly dog, Jack may fit with your family. He is a Jack Russell Terrier who loves attention from every person he meets. He does have a very high prey drive and would have to be the only pet in the family. Also, he would have to be leash walked always; he really does not like other animals. Mabel is a lovely yellow & white lab mix, about 1 year old. She is energetic and loves to play. She also thinks she is a lap dog and loves all people. These are just 2 of our wonderful dogs looking for their forever home. Smokey is our 3 year old declawed FILV positive kitty. He is very low energy and loves to be held and loved. He is slightly over 20 lbs., so he is definitely a big boy. Patches is a classic tortie cat, spayed, and around 3.5 years old. She likes to be her own boss and loves to play with a wand toy.

News

Paws & Claws, pictures with Santa, will be Saturday, November 22, 2008, at our shelter on Lankford Highway in Onley, VA. Time is 10 am to 2 pm. Dress up your pet, or your family, and come get your photo with the jolly elf. Our spay/neuter program has evolved yet again. During 2006, we took trips to Virginia Beach SPCA with Shore pets, to have spay/neuter surgery. VBSPCA purchased a Neuter Scooter and is now bringing the surgeries to us via this mobile surgery unit. For the time being, we are having one surgery day each month, with a total of 20 surgeries done right in our parking lot. If your pet needs to be spayed or neutered, or if you know someone who needs this service, please call us for more information. (757)787-7385. Clinic dates for the upcoming months: November 13, and December 11. There is a deadline for payment and application to be in to the shelter 12 days prior to the clinic date. As always, we need to thank our supporters who bring donations of all kinds. Thanks to you our doors are open. With your support we will be able to continue our spay/neuter assistance program, along with caring for the needs of our local animals who are down on their luck. The SPCA Eastern Shore Inc. is the area's ONLY full service animal welfare shelter. We receive no funding from government agencies or other organizations and are NOT funded by tax dollars. Our survival depends on the generosity of our donors who support our mission of saving the lives of pets who have fallen on hard times. At the SPCA-Eastern Shore, no adoptable pet will be euthanized for space considerations......EVER!

Who We Are

In August of 2005, the SPCA Eastern Shore rededicated itself to our true mission- to provide a safe haven for animals in Accomack and Northampton Counties on Virginia's Eastern Shore. For many years the SPCA had served as the housing facility for the Animal Control divisions of Accomack and Northampton Counties. After a consultation with the Humane Society of the United States, our SPCA Board of Directors felt that the true mission of our SPCA was being overwhelmed by our obligations to the two counties. Due to space considerations and the constant influx of stray and feral animals, adoptable animals were unable to be held for longer than the legal minimum. In July of 2004, the counites opened the new Regional Animal Control Facility for the purpose of housing the Animal Control function of the county governments. Our SPCA has been able to successfully place 98% of the animals seeking shelter with us. We continue to work with the new Regional facility, drawing animals from them to place for adoption. This is truly a co-operative effort by people who care deeply about the welfare of pets in our community.

Adopting a friend

The SPCA-Eastern Shore Inc. is committed to finding loving lifetime homes for as many of our shelter animals as possible. We will not make adoption arrangements over the phone. After visiting the shelter and selecting the right pet for you, you will be asked to fill out an adoption application. There is a mandatory 24 hour waiting period before adoptions will be finalized. Once your application is approved, we will transport your new pet to the local veterinarian of your choice for spaying/neutering. You will pick up your new pet from the veterinarian's office, your adoption paperwork having been completed at the time of selection. Our adoption fee for residents of Accomack and Northampton Counties in Virginia is $75.00 for a cat or a dog. The fee for out of area and non resident adoptions is $100.00. Animals MUST be spayed or neutered before leaving our shelter to go beyond our local area.

Come Visit Us!

The SPCA-Eastern Shore Animal Shelter is located on Rt. 13 in Onley, Virginia, just south of Nandua High School. Mile marker 111 is directly in front of our building. Our public hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM. Animal visitation hours are Tuesday though Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM.
