Who We Are
As of November 1, 2001, the Animal Control Program for Northumberland County was placed under the direct supervision of then Northumberland County Sheriff, Wayne Middleton. Sheriff Middleton, recognizing the rural county needed assistance with adoption of animals accepted the help of volunteers, headed by Fran Warren.
In October 2005 a new addition, completely funded by donations, was added to create a cat facility and an adoption lobby. In 2007, a second addition to add 24 kennels, quarantine rooms, and a nursery for mommies with new puppies was started. The facility will also have a medical room and food storage. This second addition, scheduled to be completed in late 2008, is also funded completely by donations.
Volunteers operate a "yard sale" in Lottsburg, VA to fund the medical needs of the animals in the shelter. The sale has been so successful it has funded cat condos, new puppy crates for the smaller dogs and other animal care needs of the shelter.
Under the dedicated leadership of both the Sheriff and Deputy Roger Briney, the Animal Control Officer, the volunteers clean kennels, socialize animals, assist with administrative duties and operate the adoption program for both cats and dogs.
Adopting a friend
Virginia State Law requires that all animals adopted from this facility be spayed or neutered. Other than for residents of Northumberland, Westmoreland, Richmond or Lancaster Counties, any animal adopted from this facility must be spayed or neutered before the new adopter takes possession of the animal. Arrangements for spaying or neutering can be made through the local veterinarians.
No animal will be "shipped" from this shelter. You must personally visit the shelter.

The shelter is located on State Route 360 east of Heathsville. The shelter is located on the left approximately 1 mile past Horsehead. The hours of the shelter are Saturdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, or by appointment. To make an appointment or for additional information, call Fran at 804-435-2597.
