ADOPTIONS:

Except in special cases, Westie Rescue places incoming Westies with people who have filled out our adoption application and are ALREADY ON our adoption candidate list.

To become an Adoption Candidate list, please fill out the adoption application on the Westie Rescue Web site, sponsored by Westie Rescue Mid-Atlantic. Most of our rescues are quickly adopted (by people who have already registered) before we have time to post them here.

If you are not in the Mid-Atlantic area (we require personal home visits), your application will be sent to the region where you reside so Westie Rescue individuals and organizations in your area will be aware of your desire to adopt a dog.

If you know of SOMEONE WHO NEEDS HELP WITH A WESTIE or a WESTIE WHO NEEDS A NEW HOME, please contact us on their behalf by filling out the "Dog in Trouble Report" form on our web site. (Only for use when dogs need help...not for adoption information!).

Please provide a means of reaching the person or shelter with the Westie such as a phone number.

Who We Are

Westie Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc. provides rescue, fostering, medical, and adoption services for abused, abandoned, neglected, and/or homeless West Highland White Terriers ("Westies").

Our primary area includes Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia (Washington DC).

We also provide assistance to Westies in the U.S. where there is no Westie Rescue group/individual available to help. We accept any Westie without regard to health, behavior, temperament, or breeding.

Westie Rescue Mid-Atlantic is an all volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization which is funded by donations from the public. Westies are fostered in private homes during rehabilitation or until adoption.

All dogs are required to be spayed or neutered before placement. A donation to cover program expenses is required at the time of adoption.

Adopting a Friend

Adoption Policies:

1. Reside in our adoption area so we can do a home visit. This area covers Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, southern New Jersey, and the District of Columbia (Washington DC). We do NOT ship dogs to new homes.
2. Complete and submit our adoption application.
3. Agree to a home visit prior to adopting a dog.

Restrictions on Adoptions (and Reasons):

1. Rescue does not place dogs in homes with children younger than 7 years old. (40% of the Westies given up to our program are due to poor interaction with small children).
2. Rescue does not place Westies in homes with resident cats. (Westies were developed to hunt predators the size of cats. To this day, most Westies retain the instinct to hunt and kill such animals. For the safety of people's cats, we do not place in homes where one resides.)

Adoption Application -

You can submit an adoption application in three ways:

1. ONLINE SUBMISSION: Fill out the "application" on the Internet.
2. EMAILED TO YOU: Send an email to "Mid-Atlantic Adoption" stating you want the application to be sent by email to you. This option is for the application to be EMAILED to you...not mailed to a street address
3. MAILED TO A STREET ADDRESS: Send a Self Addressed AND Stamped envelope to Westie Rescue, P.O. Box 342, Dunn Loring, VA 22027 stating you want an application mailed to you.

Volunteers -

Volunteers and donations are always welcome and needed.

If you would like to help us with rescued dogs or with other rescue activities [events, fund raising, administrative work, etc.], please fill out the "Mid-Atlantic Volunteer Form". If you have trouble finding or filling out the form, please click on "Web Questions?" to send an email for help.

The more caring people who are actively involved, the less chance that Westies in need will fail to be helped by the rescue system in the US and be euthanized by owners or in shelters.

Donations -

Just as all other rescues and shelters always desparately need donations, Westie Rescue also appreciates every contribution made to keep our rescue program going.

Donations are used ONLY as necessary to ensure that Westies are rescued, rehabilitated, and adopted.

We are an IRS approved 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable group. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
