| History of the Brownsville SPCA The Brownsville Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been in existence since 1997. It is a 501, C-3 non-profit organization supported solely by donations and membership dues. All contributions are tax-deductible. It is the purpose of the Brownsville SPCA to improve the quality of life for animals in the Brownsville area by helping educate the public in the proper care and responsibility of animal/pet ownership. It is further dedicated to helping return lost animals to their owners, to promote the responsible adoption of animals needing homes and to promote the reduction of the population surplus of unwanted animals by programs such as spay/neuter. While we do not have a shelter of our own, we do need volunteers to help work various projects we get involved with or sponsor. Foster families are always needed to help take care of injured or strays found by members of the organization. From time to time, there are errands or appointments that need to be kept, contacting citizens and businesses in the community, addressing the monthly newsletter, purchasing postage stamps or “chair” the telephone committee, plan for refreshments at the monthly meeting or be the “thank you” note writer for the organization. There is ALWAYS something for everyone to do! Information has been increasing regarding the connection between animal violence and child/adult abuse. Studies indicate that children that abuse animals in their childhood do indeed tend to be violent in their adult life. Many times animals suffer the abuse rather than family members by being kicked, beaten, and deprived of food, water and shelter. The BSPCA is dedicated to helping abused individuals find a safe place for their beloved pet(s) until the situation is improved and/or resolved. This is where foster families are important and BADLY NEEDED! 2007 is our 10th Anniversary! Check out or events for meetings and other fun activities! | |
