Our Featured Pet...

Here is the story of Little Deer's rescue, which occured on Dec 8, 2006:
On the way to pick up some stray pups, we almost ran over a little black Chihuahua doggie who came running across the road just as were passing by. Luckily the dog stopped and ran back the other way, jumped a barbed wire fence and started to go into the woods but stopped and looked at us. We could see no cars or houses around where he could have belonged. This little fella was holding his back leg up, and Mary asked me what we should do? I told her to get out of the van and call to him and if he came to her, we would take him to Straydog. I thought that if he ran away from Mary, he probably had a home somewhere nearby. But he didn't run away. As soon as Mary called him, the little doggie came running out of the woods, jumped the fence like a deer and came running right into Mary's arms. We put him in the only crate we had (which was for the puppies we were about to rescue), and on we went. Another homeless doggie in the middle of the road! We named him Little Deer because he looked just like a deer jumping the fence with his little ears standing up. He is a cutie and a very sweet little guy. News
Please call us or visit our website to learn more about the 100+ dogs and 30+ cats currently in our care. We take a vanload of dogs and cats to the PetsMart in Plano, Texas, on Central Expwy/U.S. Hwy 75 at Parker Rd. every Saturday. We are there from 11:00 a.m. til 3:00 p.m. Please contact us via email or phone if you would like us to bring to PetsMart a special dog or cat you've seen on this website, or make an appointment and come out and see the animal you're interested in right here at Straydog, located near Gun Barrel City, TX. If you contact us the week before a scheduled adoption day, we most likely can make arrangements to bring to the adoption day any particular animals you would like to meet.
Who We Are
Straydog Inc is a non-profit, no-kill shelter southeast of Dallas. We currently have about 100+ formerly homeless dogs at our facility (plus 30+ cats in foster homes) that all want "forever families." All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and on heartworm preventive. All cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and tested for common feline diseases. All medical records for any animal are available. We feed high quality food to each of our residents, in addition to providing lots of human interaction and off-leash playtime in our park. Just about every dog has a kennelmate at Straydog, and each kennel is spacious, clean and offers safe, warm protection from the elements. All fostered cats are kept inside.
Our Philosopy
Straydog is a "lifeboat" and sanctuary for rescued dogs and cats. A vacant spot in a kennel is an empty seat in our lifeboat. We will continue to row this lifeboat to shore, dropping off rescued dogs and cats into the arms of good adopters. We will continue to fill the space left vacant by each animal with another desperate homeless animal for as long as we are financially able to do so. We believe our struggle to help homeless animals must be publicized to wake people up and make them aware of the necessity of SPAYING and NEUTERING their dogs and cats. We hope that through this awareness, homeless dog and cat rescue lifeboats will one day no longer be necessary.
Adopting a Friend
If you are interested in adopting a pet, you can call or e-mail to set up a visit with the dog/cat and one of our volunteers. We do make HOME VISITS to be sure the potential adoptee will get along with other possible companion dogs, cats and children. All adopted animals must be inside pets.
Come Visit Us!
We are located about an hour and twenty minutes from Dallas, and we will be happy to take you on a tour of our shelter by appointment. Please call or e-mail to make arrangements.
