Austin Zoo is really a rescue zoo. We are a sanctuary that is open to the public. REAL sanctuaries never breed animals. Why would we want to make more animals when so many are in need of placement and loving care. If you are asked to donate to an exotic animal sanctuary you should view their website. If there are a bunch photos with baby animals then something is fishy. Also, check their listing on www.guidestar.org to see if they are financially stable enough to continue long term care for their animal residents.
Who We Are
Austin Zoo is a "rescue zoo" and nationally recognized. We take in homeless, stray, unwanted, confiscated, abandoned, abused, exotic, wild and domestic animals. We do not breed or sell. The exotic and wild animals never leave here unless they can be better served at another facility. We do place domestic pets if we can find permanent qualified homes, for example, domestic dogs, cats, rabbits, goats, potbellied pigs and small reptiles. Don't call us thinking we will get you a tiger, because that is just not happening. :)
How You Can Help
We are now taking new helpers into our volunteer program. If you can't make the time committment you can donate unwanted toddler toys for the monkeys and small cats. You can donate fruit and vegetables for the monkeys, bears, pigs, deer, and birds. You can be a good guardian for your pet! And remind people that "WILD ANIMALS DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS"! Please, spay and neuter.
Adopting a friend
To adopt one of our animals you must first fill out an application, then come and visit us and the animal. If it is meant to be you and the animal will have a happy life together.

Directions from 290 west:
From the Hwy 290W/71W split take 290 West, go 2.5 miles and turn Rt at the light onto Circle Drive. Go 1.5 miles down Circle Drive and turn RT on Rawhide Trail. We are 1 mile down on RT.
