Our Pet List

Pet of the Month

Pearl Bailey

This wondrful girl was dumped on a vaccant piece of property along with one other little guy, both were being fed by families in the neighborhood until a very loving caring citizen stopped and rescued them from the life they were living on the streets. Although the neighborhood was feeding these babies Pearl Bailey and Redsky were also living off garbage and scraps that they could find, drinking from a polluted stream, and sleeping curled up together for warmth because they didn't have any shelter. They both had to have extensive vet care, Pearl tested heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment, and Red had some really extensive internal problems. Both are healthy and ready for adoption now It would be wonderful if they could go to the same home but we will seperate them if needed. If you can help give these babies a wonderful new start in life please contact rrspca@sbcglobal.net or call 940 668 6491. If you can't adopt but would like to donate please do so by clicking the donation button or going to Pearl or Reds page and help sponsor them any donations are deeply appreciated

Our "babies" are all in foster care with different homes in the North Texas area. We try to post pictures and keep up with our "Pet of the Month" but alot of times we just simply stay too busy to change it, but rest assured that each pet is special every month. We do a lot of special-needs pets also and this is what your donations will be helping. We also offer certificates to people who sponsor one of the special needs babies. If you are interested in this program, please contact Dusti at rrspca@sbcglobal.net or 940 668-6491 and she will let you know what is available and which one needs your love and generousity the most. Thank you for your Donation and being a "Rescue Angel" to our babies in need.

Thank you

Who We Are

Red River SPCA is a non-profit organization. Started in 1987, RRSPCA is dedicated to helping people and pets enjoy each other and is operated entirely by a handful of volunteers fostering at their residences. We are a no-kill "shelterless." We rescue and rehabilitate, investigate abuse calls, answer LOTS of questions in person and by phone (also email). We help people get their pets sterilized low-cost, offer animals for adoption and speak to groups.

Prior to the summer of '03, RRSPCA helped 500-700 animals each year (average of 50 dogs and 30 cats at a time) in Cooke & Montague Counties and the western part of Grayson in Texas. Most are dogs and cats of all ages and sizes. However, this area is largely rural, so RRSPCA also rescues a variety of livestock and even wild critters. (We rehab and release wild critters. They are not adoptable.)

Adopting a friend

Originally, most of the critters were fostered at Tranquility Base, farm residence of Tommie Kirksmith-Newman and, since '05, Ned Newman.

I'm Tommie, RRSPCA's President & Investigator. My first husband passed away in '03. I've remarried -- Ned's late wife helped me start RRSPCA -- but I still sometimes go by Kirksmith because, in addition to my humane society and farm-related responsibilities, I run the family business started by my first husband. These duties, plus obligations as Ned's wife, leave me little time to care for the fostered animals.

Dusti serves on our Board of Directors as VP and has assumed many responsibilities of our foster program. She and her husband live in Gainesville. They don't have a lot of room, so she can't take on many dogs at a time. But she doesn't keep them very long. They get adopted pretty soon! Dusti does a super job of housebreaking and totally spoiling these doggies. You would need to ask Dusti for directions to her place. Or, she might meet you someplace else.

Queries for any of our listed animals may be emailed to me or you may call me at RRSPCA's listed 940-668-6309. It rings on my personal phone, 940-668-6714. Leave a message if I don't answer the phone. Regarding queries for animals that are not here with me, I will forward emails and re-direct phonecalls to the person who has them.

HOWEVER, MOST OF OUR LISTED ANIMALS INCLUDE INFO FOR WHERE THEY'RE BEING FOSTERED. IT'S QUICKER FOR YOU TO CONTACT THAT PERSON DIRECTLY THAN TO GO THROUGH ME -- UNLESS, OF COURSE, I'M THE ONE LISTED AS FOSTERING IT.

Rather than ask specific fees, RRSPCA asks for tax-deductible donations to reimburse our expenses for the animals' shots, getting fixed, etc. Any additional donation is appreciated!

Sterilization expense varies by weight and gender, but a ballpark figure is $100 to $150 for fully vetted dogs that includes shots, heart worm testing and spay or neuter, $65 for fixed male cats and $75 for fixed female cats. This donation fee includes all their shots. For Puppies too young to be altered we do have a spay and neuter contract. On all of our animals we ask that an adoption application is filled out. for this application please Email: rrspca@sbcglobal.net
and we will get one out to you

As per state law -- Title 10, Chapter 828, Section 828.002 of the Texas Health & Safety Code "spay/neuter statute" for shelters -- we do require sterilization agreements for adopting unfixed dogs or cats of any age. (We take in a few unfixed adults.) For critters that haven't been fixed or inoculated for rabies by a vet, we usually have about $15 invested in each for 2 sets of inoculations and wormers. I qualify as "usually" because some animals are adopted nearly right away. We wait 2-3 weeks between the first shots/wormers and the boosters.

Come Visit Us!

Please understand that it's nothing personal if I seem grouchy or breathless when I answer the phone. We welcome your interest in our adoptable critters!

Directions: Most of the cats and bigger dogs are fostered at Tranquility Base. Address is 1215 CR 140, Whitesboro TX 76273.

Whitesboro is in Grayson County, but the farm is in northeast Cooke County and is accessed by Hwy 82. Hwy 82 runs east/west. It connects with I-35 at Gainesville and with Hwy 75 at Sherman. Tranquility Base is about 15 miles from Gainesville and 24 miles from Sherman.

Because our mailing address differs from our resident county, you might not find us by using www.mapquest.com or similar Internet map directions using our Whitesboro address. If you have this problem, aim for the intersection of Hwy 82E and FM 678, Gainesville TX 76240. That will get you most of the way here. The rest is described below.

Coming from Gainesville, get on Hwy 82 and head east. You want FM 678, which is 13 -14 miles from the I-35 intersection. You will drive through OakRidge. It'll have convenience stores that sell gas & booze on the south side and Shooters Bar & Grill on the north side. Go another mile and a half to the blinking light at FM 678.

Turn north onto FM 678, go half a mile and turn right onto CR 140. Tranquility Base, is about a mile east, on the north side.

Coming from Sherman, go through Whitesboro plus another 4 - 5 miles west to the blinking light at FM 678. Turn north (right) and proceed from there --

I will know when you have arrived. My doorbells will bark!
