Monte came into H.E.A.R. almost 6 months ago, he was extremely underweight and had favored his right rear hip from either being hit by a car or someone had hit him with a bat. He was also very fearful of humans and defensive. Once he got here we just gave him time to come around, I would let him play with our very friendly dogs who loved to be sociable and also liked people and over time Monte's leg began to heal and he came around and started to play again. I also introduced him to the puppies and he was very gentle with them. Monte has proven to be a wonderful dog who's personality has finally come out and he can be himself who loves to be around other animals and people. If Monte would of been turned over to the Pound or the Humane Society of Nashville they would of NOT spent the time he needed to come around. But, at H.E.A.R. he did get that time and I now feel he will make a wonderful family pet when he finds his new forever home.
Monte was lucky, because he got the chance to come to H.E.A.R. and heal his wounds. We have to turn away many dogs who need help just like Monte, but with our limited funds we can only take in so many.
They need time to heal their wounds so they can become loving Family Pets.
Running One of the Only True NO-Kill Rescues in Nashville is not Cheap.
It's an easy out, to go ahead and just put them to sleep.
It's Dedication, to care for them and love them until their forever home is found.
H.E.A.R. is also a Sanctuary for those that will never leave.
Some are Old or on Medication, while others have been
so Abused they will never truly trust humans again.
This is a Sad Reality that most people only want the cute friendly ball chasing
well mannered perfect dogs. Not many want those that truly need help.

(I would like to thank the Anonymous Donor for Paying the Mortgage this Month on the Rescue)
Funds Raised from Donation Boxes so far in May, 2008 = $75.00

The Dogs in This Area Now Have Coverage from Snow, Heat and Rain
This Awning Cost about $150.00 with materials. Labor was "FREE".
We need to build 5 more. Can you HELP?
Now we have an entry way into our Front Office and framed out the walk-way deck to the back...
I will add more photos once the top deck boards are laid down and finished...
The First Half of the Walk Way to the Back Kennels is Finished...
It was time to move on to the Observation Deck for the Dogs that is in front of the Rescue.
(Dogs Love to Be in High Places - Even if it's only 3ft. off the Ground)
When completed it will have railing around the front and a stairway to the Walk Way Deck.
Sorry to take so long in getting the next photos done, but without nails for our nail gun
All the 2x2 posts had to be installed with screws and ended up taking about 3 days to complete this part.
I will be building the railing for the steps next and then up the walk-way to the front yard area.
If you would like to help out, you could purchase H.E.A.R. a Gift Card through
Home Depot for about $150.00 and we can get this Job done.
It will give us another secure yard that will be fenced in for our
Senior Dogs and Puppies to play in.
April 29, 2008 - We received a Gift Card to Home Depot from Vicky Green & Amy Schmidlein for $200.00 to purchase the Nails and other Materials we needed to start completing the Front Deck Area and Observation Deck.
As you can see, the project is coming along and should be finished by this weekend. I will finish putting up the Rest of the 2x2 picket posts and then stain the new pieces of wood to match the rest of the Decking. I will then build the gate on the Left side of the Mobile Home which is our storage building. This will then totally enclose the front area, and will allow more of our Dogs to enjoy the outside and have their own play area.
The Main fencing area is now Complete, I still have to stain the new wood and put the metal roof on over the Awning that was built to secure the Gate. But as you can see it's pretty much complete and the dogs and puppies love it. They are running all over and having a blast in their new play yard.
This Entire Project Ran about $200.00 in Materials, Labor was "FREE"...
It was now time to move to the back and finish up a divider fence in the main back yard play area. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough 8ft. Pickets to do the job and had to switch to 6ft. Pickets and get creative by designing a fence with the materials I had. As you can see they are piled up in the yard and each used board had to be cleaned and all nails and screws pulled out, but as you can see the project is coming along. I also ran out of 2" nails that were used to put up the pickets and now have to screw each one in place. This Project should be done in the next few days.
Once I complete it, I will post pictures of the new fence and play yard for some of our dogs.
This is what can be DONE with your Donations...
Please keep giving so we can purchase more Materials to finish more Jobs.
Thank you to Those that have Given to Help Keep this Rescue Going...

We figure it costs around $150 to get a dog ready for adoption, plus how many months they are here before they got adopted. The average dog is here 3 to 6 months so you can figure we are into each dog around $500 before it gets adopted out and if you take our current adoption fee of $100.00 we lose money every time we do an adoption.
On the Average we only do 2-4 adoptions each month. So you can see, the adoption fee we collect doesn't even come close to covering all our normal expenses each month (which run around $2,500 a month) to keep these doors open. It's not cheap to save a Dogs Life. So to make up for this, we have to ask for Donations to help cover our Loses each Month.
We also use the Donations to finish the fencing around the Rescue, finish up the inside areas to give each dog their own sleeping quarters, painting and so much more. It also goes to Vet care when a dog needs Medical Attention or we have to get them Spayed or Neutered. We are an all Volunteer Rescue and no one collects a pay check. This Rescue is about 80% done, please help us finish with your Contributions, so we can continue to do what we have done for the last 10 years. Saving the Homeless, Abandoned and Abused Dogs of Nashville.

Where will they go if we are not here to help them?

We also assist the elderly and handicap people on fixed incomes with pets who can't afford to feed their pets and could possibly surrender them to the pound if they couldn't feed them. We assist these people by giving them dog food, cat food or cat liter to take the financial pressure off of feeding them and just give their pets the love they deserve.
We also help other Rescues who come up short each month when it comes to feeding the animals in their care. Over the years we have become a warehouse for broken bags of dog food that grocery stores accumulate and instead of throwing them in the trash, they call us and donate them to us. We receive more than we can use each month, so we are happy to share this food with those that need it most.
If you know of someone who falls under these categories and have financial problems feeding their pets, let them know of our "Feed Our Pets Program" and lets get them the food they need to care for their pets...
When you make a Donation - it helps us pay the gas to get this much needed dog food, cat food and cat liter to the elderly and handicap people on fixed incomes with pets.

It's an Animal Rescuers responsibility to show this animal that not all humans are bad people and slowly build up their confidence to trust humans again and when they are ready, we locate a loving forever home they will go to and be loved for the rest of their lives.
I never asked for this job, but here it is, I am an Animal Rescuer. I do the best I can, I have saved many, I have lost a few. I have cried over a dog I never knew and buried more than I want to count. I remember everyone of their names and their personality.
One of the few joys I get is when people and families send me pictures and letters of the dogs they have adopted from here. Thanking me for saving them and how much joy, laughter and love they have given to their families. This is what makes it all worth while.
Helping animals comes slow at first. You see one on the road or walking alone with their ribs showing from not eating. You decide to help one, you bring them back to health, you find them a loving home and you see how good it makes you feel that you saved a life.
Then two more come knocking, you help those two and four more come knocking. It's a battle we will never win, but as long as we save a few, those few will know they were saved and become loving happy family pets. We in the Rescue Business are doing a job you would never do, even though you love animals. Some just don't have the heart. You have to take the bad with the good.
When you have seen some of the dogs that I have seen over the years, you sometimes want to take their X owners and give them just ONE day in the life of a dog they had, but then I would be arrested for being in-humane...
