Who We Are
Puddy Tat Protectors, Inc. D/B/A The House of Mews is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, no-kill cat sanctuary, cat adoption agency and cat lover's gift shop which opened its doors October 23, 1995 and is the FIRST of its kind in the region. Our store is like no other and was for its first 11 years housed at 944 S. Cooper. In March of 2007 the store moved across the street to 933 S. Cooper and the sanctuary is a 1,000 s.f. store complete with catwalks high up in the air in the Historic Cooper-Young District in Memphis, TN and houses over 100 homeless cats, with over 47 cats roaming loose throughout the beautifully decorated store. Over 7,600 cats have been adopted from 1995-2008. The store was created and founded by Elain Harvey, who acts as Managing Director and is staffed by volunteers from all walks of life: physicians, pilots, teachers, nurses, doctors, artists, housewifes, attornies, interior designers, vet techs and therapists. Acting as Assistant Director is Ann Hightower, formerly Assistant Dean in Health Sciences at University of Tennessee.
Adopting A Friend
Our procedure for adoption requires first filling out an adoption application for approval. We spay/neuter our cats, Leuk/Aids test them, apply Revolution for fleas, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, & earmites. Some vaccinations are already given. 1yr & 3yr Rabies vaccinations are given when we spay/neuter. During the first month of adoption we help with diagnosis of illness and dispense free meds to help defray costs for our adopters. Our adoption fees range from $70 on up depending on mixed breed, declawed, purebred or kittens. In some cases adoption fees are flexible, especially for special needs cats.
