ABOUT SAVE THE STRAYS
Save the Strays Animal Rescue is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned animals, with a primary focus on dogs. We find homes for our animals through direct adoption and through other rescues and shelters.
The IRS has granted our organization 501c3 tax-exempt / public charity status. (Click here to see our IRS determination letter.) All donations are tax-deductible and are used solely to pay for our animals' needs.
ABOUT OUR DOGS
We rescue most of our dogs from local roads and woods, where they were abandoned. As space permits, we also pull animals facing euthanasia from animal control facilities all over the state. We rarely take owner-surrendered pets because of limitations on space, help and time. But we are willing to help owners find new homes for their pets or for strays they have found by posting courtesy listings on our website and directing them to other channels through which they can advertise pets for adoption.
We quarantine new dogs for a minimum of two weeks before making them available for adoption. If they are six months or older, we test them for heartworms and treat them if they test positive. Dogs six months and older are also spayed or neutered before adoption. All are wormed and receive age-appropriate vaccinations at intake and are placed on monthly, year-round heartworm prevention. Dogs with medical issues receive all needed vet care and medications or surgeries.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VISIT
We are a small, all-volunteer organization and do not have a shelter facility or regular visiting hours. Our dogs live in several homes. For that reason, please call or email to make an appointment if you would like to meet our dogs. That way, we can tell you which dogs are where, and arrange a time for you to visit. If you are interested in a particular dog or live some distance from us, we recommend completing our adoption application and getting approval to adopt before coming to visit. This allows you to take a dog home with you, rather than making another trip.

Your donations help us rescue, rehabilitate and maintain our dogs until we can find them permanent homes. Some of the dogs we rescue need emergency or intensive medical care at intake, while others require corrective surgery down the line. We also have special needs pets who require aids like K9 carts to get around, and other dogs with chronic conditions that require lifelong medication. ALL need the basics of food, housing, bedding, and vaccinations. (Rising costs have now pushed our dog food bill to more than $500/month.) We can't do it without support from animal lovers like you.
