*Update 7/5: Sassy is now pending and looking forward to living the good life in NH!! She is scheduled to go home in just a few days. -- Hi There! My name is Yasmine and if I could talk, I would tell you quite a story about my life. I came to the shelter when I was taken from my young, irresponsible owner once he could no longer care for me. I was pregnant and under-nourished. Gosh, what was he thinking? I am still a pup myself only being one year old. Many of my puppies died when I couldnʼt produce enough milk to care for them. The other puppies were taken away from me. I am a great little bundle of joy who just wants a family to call my own. I had a skin issue but that is getting better with some medicine the staff is giving me. Once I get into a real home, I will really look great! I am small, pretty and compact too. Even though I am at a shelter, the volunteers here have been working with me to obtain my AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. Everyone tells me how well I am doing. I am treat motivated and pick up commands very quickly. Like most dogs my breed, I love to play ball and am very friendly. Upon adoption, I will come with reduced AKC Canine Good Citizen training for only $65.00 and my trainer says I already make her very proud. Please consider taking me into your heart and home. Do you have any old tennis balls you plan on getting rid of? We are running low and our dogs absolutely love playing with them. They don't need to be anything special, or even particularly clean. We would be so grateful! -- We are always in need of rawhide, used tennis balls, stuffed or very durable dog toys, large/thick leashes, and medium & large dog collars.

Please watch channel 10 Saturday mornings between 9:10-9:25 to see Providence VSA pet of the week. One lucky dog or cat from Providence Animal Control goes on channel 10 for everyone to see. We are in need of experienced volunteers to come socialize and train our stray dogs, particularly during the week.
Who We Are
The Providence Chapter of Volunteer Services for Animals, 272-1639, provides volunteer assistance to the Providence Animal Care and Control Center. We encourage placement of impounded animals by: helpful contact with visitors; placement of pictures and articles in newspapers and Internet sites; and provide funds for emergency veterinary care of impounded animals. VSA helps the animals feel comfortable and happy by providing walks, visiting and playing with them, and providing training whenever possible. VSA maintains a lost/found file and a wants/needs home file. We also provide counseling for pet owners with problems, referring them to Veterinarians and other pet related organizations. Volunteer Services for Animals strongly advocates for the spay or neuter of all family pets. Financial assistance is available to all RI residents that cannot afford the full cost of spaying or neutering their pets. Adopting a friend
Any dog coming in to the shelter must be held for 5 full business days to give the owner a chance to claim him/her. During that 5 day period, anyone that wants to adopt the dog can fill out the adoption application to put the dog on "hold." Several people may put a hold on the same dog, but after the 5 day waiting period is up, applicants are called based on the appropriateness of the home and the order that the applications were filled out.
There is a $10 adoption fee, no cash can be accepted only personal checks or money orders. All pets being adopted must have a pre-paid spay or neuter from the Veterinarian of your choice. The shelter also works with a few different Vets that discount services for adopted animals. Low cost spay/neuter information is available at the shelter or by calling 401-272-1639. Any Pit Bull or Pit Bull mix being adopted is dropped off at the Vet the morning of their surgery and picked up by the adopter after the surgery has been done. All Pit Bulls and/or Pit Bull mixes residing in Providence must also carry liabilty insurance. If you own your home you must provide proof of home ownership. If you rent you must provide a notarized letter from a landlord stating you can have a pet.

Shelter hours (hours open to the public) are Monday - Friday 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM and 11:00 AM - 2:45 PM Saturday - closed holidays. Animal Control is available to answer phone calls during these hours. The phone number is (401) 243-6040. If you need to contact Animal Control for emergencies (stray, abandoned, abused or endangered animals) during other hours, please call the Providence Police (401-272-3121) and ask for Animal Control Complaints.
The Providence Animal Shelter is located at 7 Service Road. To get there, take exit 18 (Thurbers Ave.) off 95 and head toward Allens Ave (from 95S, bear left on exit -- from 95N bear right). Take a right onto Allens Ave and follow it for a little over 1/2 mile to your 2nd over head traffic light.
This is the intersection of Allens and Terminal Road. Follow the Ernest Street detour by taking your first right off of Terminal and taking a left on to Ernest.. Follow Ernest Street all the way to the end (past the Dead End sign) where it bears right. Just after bearing right (you are now on Service Road), you will see a yellow building on your left. This is the shelter.
