Who we are

German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue PA is an all volunteer, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Our group of volunteers donate their time and energy to evaluating GSPs coming into our program, fostering dogs in our homes while they wait for a new home, and visiting potential adoptive homes. We also raise funds used for veterinary care and make others aware of the breed. We are committed to finding loving, permanent “forever homes” for dogs in our care. German Shorthaired Pointers usually come into rescue from shelters and from owners no longer wanting or able to care for them. We will not accept a aggressive, biting dogs. Our main web site is www.gsprescuepa.com

All GSPs available for adoption through rescue are up to date on required vaccinations and are spayed or neutered before being placed in their new home. All About Joe!

joe

Joe - Update July 2007 Wonderful older male found stray with his best friend Penny back in 2006

  • Joe was found stray and taken to the pound. After their time was up and they were unclaimed by their owner, GSP Rescue was called to prevent them from being needlessly euthanized as their temperaments were wonderful. NOTE!! Joe refuses to have accidents!!

  • After his bath to wash the filth from him, Joe ended up being a bright ticked male, good bone, handsome and very, very sweet.

  • He was taken straight from the pound to the vet's for all shots including rabies, bordetella, frontline, heartworm preventive (he is heartworm, Lyme and erlichiosis negative), neuter, and worming. His ears have healed hematomas due to allergies.

  • Joe is extremely friendly and quite proud being the official office greeter!

  • Joe is older - about 8 yo - the perfect companion to someone looking for a mature, loving friend. Please consider Joe the Man!!

  • Joe is in foster care very close to Washington, SW PA, and he'd love to meet and fall in love with you just as he knows you'll fall in love with him!! :)

Characteristics of German Shorthaired Pointers

gsp_photo
The German Shorthaired Pointer developed in Germany during the 1800’s as an all around hunting dog and companion. Breed development continued in the 1900’s by combining characteristics from other breeds. The first known German Shorthairs were imported into the USA between 1890 and 1920.Currently there are over 10,000 German Shorthaired Pointers registered every year with the American Kennel Club. In general, GSPs are highly energetic and athletic dogs. They need exercise and fenced yards, or a runner in the family. Fencing, invisible fencing and leash running are all suitable. The older dogs are less active, and make ideal placements with families more suited to a pet with a lower energy level. GSP Rescue PA’s volunteers strive to match the rescue German Shorthair’s energy level, personality, and needs with the new family.

Pat Divany Memorial Fund

IN MEMORY OF PAT DIVANY (1961-2003) Pennsylvania lost a dedicated GSP Rescue volunteer to cancer on March 1st 2003. As a tribute to the good works in which she believed, worked hard for, and participated in with her "Dewey"; funds donated in Pat's memory have been earmarked until depletion for the German Shorthairs adopted through GSP Rescue PA in the following manner and in the form of reimbursement:

AKC's Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) - the application fee to obtain an ILP in order to enter Rescue GSPs in AKC sanctioned obedience trials, agility, tracking and hunting tests.

AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) - the certification fee to reward the Rescue GSPs who have good manners at home and in the community.

Therapy Dogs - the first year membership fee allowing GSP adopters that have applied, successfully tested and passed their Rescue GSPs as therapy dogs and be part of making a difference in nursing homes, hospitals and schools in order to provide solace and education.

Please support GSP Rescue PA's general and/or Pat Divany's special fund as you can. Contact us for more information if you have questions.
