Who We Are

January 1, 2002 was our birthdate. Since that auspicious day we have saved and placed 500 Yorkies! It has been hard work and there have been tears along the way but the dogs are all in wonderful loving homes - each family thinks THEY chose the best dog. We place the dog according to it's needs and the family's preferences. We are ALWAYS looking for FOSTER homes. Somewhere that a small scared dog can rest up after being in a shelter until it can go to its forever home. If you want to help a dog, please contact Jean at (610)678-0918 give her your address, phone number and email information. You can also call Marilyn at 610-670-2183 after 5:30 pm. Yes, it takes a special person to be able to take in a dog, especially the older dogs that we get in. But the alternative is that they have NO home to stay in. It is unthinkable to us to let a dog stay in a shelter for a moment longer than necessary when there are families who are waiting for a Yorkie.

Adopting a friend

We have found that it is necessary to educate the would-be adopter about the traits of this dainty looking but fiercely determined breed. They are NOT for every family.

For example, they do not generally like small children and they are notorious for being difficult to housetrain.

NEVER, EVER buy a puppy from a pet store! They are the sellers of poorly-bred puppymill dogs or the products of backyard breeders. No reputable breeder would allow their beloved puppies to be sold from a pet store where they would never know who was buying their puppies. If no one buys the puppies, there will be no empty cages to fill with more poorly bred, sick puppies.

PUPPIES!!!

SAYRescue does not usually get puppies in rescue. If you are looking for a Yorkie puppy, a rescue is NOT the place to look. If you are interested in purchasing a pup, please let us know and we will help you find a Yorkie through Breeder referral. Or you can find a reputable breeder at www.YTCA.org and search their database. Using a reputable breeder will help you to find a healthy dog bred to the Yorkie standard. The puppies will be expensive -- starting at $1000 and up but they are a value in the many years of happiness they will give.

If we do get a young Yorkie, it is usually a larger Yorkie (12-18 lbs) or has special needs. The Yorkies we get are usually older dogs that may also have special needs. They are not always housebroken and may react in fear until they feel safe. If you LOVE the breed and have the special love to take in one of our Yorkies, please continue with this application process.

Step 1: Fill out an adoption application: Go to www.petfinder.com and click on the 'Shelter and Rescue Groups' link at the top of the page then use the drop down menu to select your state.

Step 5: Adopt

Once you have completed and passed the home visit, you are ready to adopt one of our dogs. It will be your responsibility to check www.petfinder.com on a regular basis to see what dogs we have and inquire about them when interested. When you see a dog that you think is a match, you can contact the number in the petfinder listing to get more information and set up a meeting time/place. Our adoption fees are listed on petfinder and differ for every dog. Adoption fees are a donation to our organization. In almost every adoption case, the vet bills incurred while the dog was in our care far exceed the actual fee paid.

Volunteering and Donations

We welcome the help of anyone who knows and loves Yorkies to work with us. For more information, please contact us by e-mail and we will be happy to tell you more about this wonderful rescue group. Donations are also very welcome. All of our funds go for vet bills which can be quite high for our older dogs. You can mail your donation to Save A Yorkie Rescue, 2650 Shillington Road, Sinking Spring, PA 19608 or send it via paypal by clicking here:

Call 610-670-2183 between 7 and 9 pm or email us at SAYMarilyn@gmail.com.

Join us! Become a rescue angel. Feel good about the work you do. And for those who say, "I could never do that work; it would be too sad." Reconsider. We have many happy stories to relate. You CAN do this. We need transporters, foster homes, people who can work at the various fairs for pet rescue. We ask only for the smallest of efforts, only what you are comfortable doing. Nothing more. We become family when we work for the welfare of our Yorkies. Please visit our website to fill out a volunteer application - we would be so happy to have you.

Whatever you can do to enhance our efforts, we thank you and each of the dogs who will benefit from your generosity of life experience thanks you. If you have unique skills or a creative idea that has worked for you in fund raising, let us know about it right here. Would you be willing to coordinate a Yorkie Rescue Event at your local pet store, mall or shelter? Not sure what that is? Call and we will explain the concept. 610-670-2183 evenings. Talk to your family and friends about helping with rescue. We need EVERYONE who is willing to actually WORK, even in some small way, to help a needy Yorkie find a forever home. They may wonder WHY Yorkies would need to be rescued. Explain to them that Yorkie owners die, divorce, move, go into nursing homes and into the military. Their adored dogs need to find good loving homes. That is where we come in. We find lost and strayed Yorkies and place them in pre-approved foster homes until they can go into forever homes. In between, we pay for spaying, neutering, heartworm checks, and dental cleanings. It is expensive which is why we ask for help at Yorkie Rescue events. Get ready for our call. We promise to never ask you to do more than you are comfortable doing. Thanks for taking this first step.
