Who We Are
The Humane Society of Lackawanna County provides many services to our surrounding communities including;
- Shelter for Lost, Abandoned and Unwanted Animals.
- Pet Adoption Program.
- Affordable Spay/Neutering Clinic to assist Pet owners in financial need to spay or neuter family pets.
- Rabies Clinic.
- Educational Programs designed to teach area children the necessity of responsible pet ownership and compassion for the animals entrusted to our care.
- Cruelty Investigation and Prevention.
- Pet Therapy in cooperation with local hospitals and nursing homes.
Adopting a friend
Adoption hours are noon- 4:30 pm, 7 days a week. Potential adopters are required to complete an application and sign an adoption contract. All adopted animals are vaccinated for distemper, microchipped, have had one worming, one flea treatment, are licensed in Lackawanna County (dogs) or Feline Leukemia/FlV tested (cats)
Surrendering an Animal
Everyone surrendering animals must have photo ID. No exceptions. Animals may be surrendered to the shelter between the hours of 9am and NOON, 7 days a week. The Humane Society of Lackawanna County covers Lackawanna and Wyoming County only and cannot accept animals from any other counties due to the overwhelming number of animals that we take in and because of space limits. If you are a resident of Luzerne County your shelter is The SPCA of Luzerne County. If you are a Susquehanna County resident, your shelter is the PA SPCA in Montrose. If you are a Monroe County resident, your shelter is the PA SPCA in Stroudsburg and if you are a Wayne County resident, your shelter is Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale.
***Please do not surrender your own pet to the shelter as a stray. This happens daily and the intake staff member can tell by the behavior of the owner and the behavior/temperament of the pet that this is the case. Be responsible and don't make your pet suffer because it must be held as a stray. It will take much longer for your pet to be put up for adoption due to lack of information on it's vaccine history, housebreaking status and compatibility with kids and other animals.
This shelter is A private non-profit group, NOT A COUNTY ORGANIZATION and is not supported in any way by federal, state or local taxes, so please donate whatever amount you can when surrendering your pet so that the shelter can continue to operate.
