Animal Friends
About Animal Friends
Sixty-two years ago, at the height of World War II, a small group of Pittsburgh citizens came together in an effort to find homes for soldiers’ pets when they left to serve in the war. After the war, still faced with the need for ongoing compassionate control of the pet overpopulation and placement problem, the group opened a shelter and incorporated. They took a name that clearly articulated their mission: to serve as friends to unwanted animals.
Today, Animal Friends is uniquely prepared to serve as a leader in compassionate, pet-focused programming. Our visionary facility, the Caryl Gates Gluck Resource Center at Animal Friends, is enabling us to change the way an animal shelter can meet our region’s changing needs. From creative kenneling to for the comfort of our animals to innovative spaces for our community outreach and education programs, Animal Friends is proud to embrace the community with open arms and creative, pet-centered solutions for a kinder future for our region.
We’re proud to place over 2,500 dogs, cats, and rabbits into loving homes each year, as well as serve tens of thousands of people through our pet-focused therapeutic and educational programs.
Animal Friends is a non-profit organization that relies on community support.

Adopting a friend
We adopt out great pets! Our pets are up-to-date on all of their routine shots including rabies, have been spayed/neutered prior to going home, all cats have been FeLeuk and FIV tested, and all animals are microchipped with a lifetime registration to AVID if they are ever lost. We request a $75 adoption donation for dogs and cats over the age of 20 weeks, and a $100 donation for puppies and kittens up to and including 20 weeks. THe donation requested for rabbits is $60 or $100 for a bonded pair - no matter what age!
