Susquehanna Stray Animal Shelter, Inc.
It has been 3 months since the Board of Directors of the Susquehanna Stray Animal Shelter made the business decision to close the shelter. Once again this was a unanimous business decision made by a group of professional business men and women. There was no personal agenda for any member on the board. Unfortunately in an emotional situation such as this not everyone agrees with the decision.
To review our decision. You cannot loose $40,000.00 of a $125,000.00 budget and remain open. When you are a responsible shelter you cannot continue to function when you cannot obtain euthanasia drugs or other medicines needed to keep your animals healthy. You also cannot afford to pay vet bills for1000 animals a year. Also if you have trouble passing State Kennel Inspections with constant and costly repairs being made you certainly are not able to rebuild the whole shelter which is what needed to be done to pass inspections. (All Kennel Inspections are on the Internet under the Bureau of Dog Law).
I would hope that should you become involved in any new undertakings that you make sure the organization you are supporting is 501(c)3 and that all the proper permits, licenses and insurance is obtained to protect yourself legally. While good intentions are wonderful if not done properly disaster may follow.

It is with great sadness that I must admit the time has come to face reality and close the shelter. This has been an extremely difficult decision for the Board, but one that is now necessary and has loomed on the horizon for the past 3 years. The sole purpose of the shelter was to provide care, comfort and medical attention to injured, homeless and stray animals, with hopes of placing them in loving responsible homes. I believe we have done just that in the past. After a review of the finances and difficulties in compliance with Commonwealth regulations, increasing costs etc. the Board voted unanimously to close the shelter as of 12/31/07. The shelter has operated with a deficit for the past two years, and is now facing the issues of stricter regulations, less funding, increasing costs etc. True to the purpose of "it is for the animals", the shelter will work through the closure in cooperation with the SPCA and Animal Rescue, Inc., as well as a few other specialty breed shelters. The staff, volunteers, municipalities and the public has assisted with supporting us over the years, and are responsible for so many animals finding good homes. York County is fortunate to have several quality shelters available for stray, injured and abandoned animals, and these shelters also struggle financially. I hope the volunteers, municipalities and the public support these shelters as they did us.
We appreciated the relationship we have had with you in the past, and truly wish it did not have to come to an end. Thank you for your support over the years.

News
We ended 2005 on a successful note for the dogs. We attended to 585 dogs. Approximately 60% of the dogs were either returned to thier owner or adopted. We were once again overwhelmed with cats. We attended to 900 cats with only 190 either adopted or returned to their owner and 60 held over for the new years. We are getting ready for tremendous changes in the year 2006. We are in dire need of new quarters. Wether it be a whole new facility or rebuilding what we have. We are checking all options available.
We need ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS to help walk,
and socialize both dogs and cats as well as help with fundraisers. We can also use volunteers who would
be willing to help show our animals during open visiting hours. Stop in to see
what we are doing and see what you can do to help. We rely heavily on volunteers to help with everything and we need dependable
people because our animals can't help themselves.

If you use any DADS products (cat,dog,canned or dry) please
save your proofs of purchase for us. DADS sends us money for these proofs.
We now have purple T-Shirts and Sweatshirts available with
our logo, which is in white, on them. If you are interested in obtaining one
of our shirts for a donation of $5 you can get a T-Shirt and for a donation
of $10 you can get a Sweatshirt. We will have them at various locations the
next few months.
We have magnetic car ribbons that state "PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS". Costs are $5.00. If you want us to mail you one at $2.00 for shipping and handling.
Who We Are
We are a non-profit (501c3)
state licensed animal shelter, providing temporary shelter, emergency transport
for injured stray animals, veterinary care when needed and adoption opportunities
for suitable animals.
We also offer for adoption,
dogs and cats deemed suitable. ALL ANIMALS WILL BE SPAYED
OR NEUTERED BEFORE THEY ARE ADOPTED UNLESS THEY ARE TOO YOUNG. THEN THEY MUST
BE ADOPTED IN YORK COUNTY, PA ONLY.
As with most Pennsylvania animal
shelters we depend primarily on the generosity of the public for our existance.
Moneys donated go for vaccines,
veterinary care, food, utilities, insurance and numerous other expenses.
We are a mostly volunteer organization.
Adopting a Friend
We do personalized adoptions
matching the pet's personality and needs to a family's lifestyle.
WE DO NOT SHIP ANY ANIMALS,
under any circumstances.
As a rule, we do not adopt our
dogs into homes with young children. We have no way of knowing if the dog is
safe around young children and feel we can not take that risk. Also, young children
do not understand that if they let the dog out the door, it could get hit by
a car and killed or create hugh vet bills so we are tring to protect the dog. We suggest families with
young children contact a breed rescue where the dogs are placed in foster care
and evaluated for children.
We do adopt animals outside
of York County, PA.,as long as they are spayed/neutered before they leave..
Puppies and kittens under 4 months of age can NOT be adopted outside of York County. We
do not spay/neuter them until they are 4 months old. To legally enforce our contract, they must stay
in York county until they are old enough be spayed/neutered. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
The first step in the process
is to fill out our application and fax it to us A.S.A.P. so that we can start
the review process. OUR FAX NUMBER IS THE SAME AS OUR PHONE NUMBER. THE FAX WILL PICK IT UP. This process can take several days to complete. We do not accept first application in. We adopt to the best home. Due to rising costs we are unable to
return every long distance phone calls to answer questions about our pets listed. We
put as much information as we know in their bio's so there is nothing else we
can tell you. If you are interested in an animal fax an application as soon
as possible.

COME VISIT US
We are located south east of York, Pa. From the intersection
of SR74 and SR24 (the square in Red Lion) go 1 1/2 mile south on SR74. Turn
left on Burkholder Rd. go 2 1/2 miles. Turn left on Snyder Corner Rd. Go to
the 2nd road on the right. Turn right on Crest Hill Lane. You will go several
hundred feet, there is a sign that states "shelter parking". Our parking lot
is right beside the sign.
WE HAVE OPEN VISITING HOURS OF ADOPTABLE PETS ON SATURDAYS
AND SUNDAYS FROM NOON UNTIL 4 P.M.
We have standard hours of operation. From 8:30am to 11am Monday - Saturday. If you have lost a pet contact the shelter with a complete detailed description of the animal. The township or boro the animal was lost from your name, the numeric address where the animal was lost and a phone number to contact you.
Returns and to complete an adoption are by appointment only. ADMISSIONS will not be accepted without an appointment.
