Happy Tails: some of our dogs who have found homes

Our Featured Pet...

If I was a flower growing wild and free , all I'd want is for you to be my sweet honey bee. Well, I am a sweet little flower, by the name of Lizzie. I am a beautiful Pit Bull mix, feeling a little pit-iful right now. I have been through so very much, rescued from Georgia sometime ago and still waiting for this road trip to end. A loving permanent family is all I need to get my spirits on the rise. I am sure to fill your world with delight . I love to give kisses and cuddle in your lap. I am sweet and gentle and insecure so kids 7+ will be ideal. I have lived with other dogs, but I really would prefer to be an only pet. And believe you me, those kitty cats better stay far away! I love to go for walks and I do great in my crate, I am even paper-trained already! All I want is you, will stay with me, hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea. 2 years old-33lbs.

News

Family Dogs New Life shelter came into being after the unfortunate closure in February of 2004 of the Family Dogs NW Shelter. We would like to thank the community for thier tremendous outpouring of donations and words of encouragement, not to mention the many hours of volunteer time to make the re-opening of this new shelter a reality. Family Dogs New Life Shelter opened its doors in February 2004 and has been steadily taking in and placing dogs into new forever homes. It is the sincere hope of each of us at Family Dogs to thank all of you who support our mission that ALL DOGS - regardless of age, breed or history deserve a home of their own.

Who We Are

We are a No Kill Dog Shelter, located in SE Portland. We take in dogs from Animal Control Agencies, Humane Societies and Rescue Groups located within the state of Oregon as well as Washington. We also work with the Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah and many smaller rescue groups across the country, plus a small number of owner surrendered dogs. We specialize in handling dogs that other shelters consider unadoptable. The only criteria we have for taking in a dog is that they be social with all other dogs, and whether or not we have room! We take all breeds and mixes. We are unique in that the public is not allowed to walk through our facility and "pick a pet". Our shelter specializes in "matchmaking" with our dogs. We do not house in kennels or dog runs but in large groups or packs from 10 - 20 in a group. They are allowed to play, and interact all day long. What this does is allow us to monitor their behavior and determine their true personalities. When you come to our shelter we will talk to you about what type of dog you are looking for, what you have had in the past, and what your lifestyle is like. We will then let you know what dogs we have at our shelter that would work for what you are looking for. It does take a little more time to do things this way but we find that many times people choose their new dog based on looks, dogs they have owned in the past, positive childhood memories of a family dog or interactions they have had with friends and neighbors dogs. This is not a good way to choose a new pet as they are all individuals and have different needs. We will only show you dogs that we are comfortable will be a good match for both you and the dog. Give us a try. We have successfully placed over 4,000 dogs to date and very possibly could have the pet you have been longing for.
