Many families include a Christmas tree as part of their holiday decorations. Some dogs and cats like to drink the tree water; the water itself is not poisonous, but if a fertilizer was added to the water it may be poisonous. This fertilizer may cause the pet to suffer with diarrhea and vomiting. It is better to try to prevent the pets from drinking tree water by keeping it covered.
Many cats love to climb the Christmas tree. This by itself is not really dangerous, unless the tree is knocked over, then the cat could withstand a traumatic injury. There is no sure fire way to keep cats from climbing except to keep them separated from the tree, unless supervised.
Ornaments and lights are also commonly chewed and/or ingested by dogs and cats. This can become very dangerous especially if the pet is electrocuted or develops a GI foreign body. A foreign body usually requires surgery to remove it; this is a traumatic surgery that not all pets survive. Also, glass ornaments and lights commonly leave cuts and lacerations in the mouth if chewed.

Who We Are

We are Jefferson County Kennels & Dog Control. We are operated by Jefferson County Public Works in Madras Oregon. We are a facility for dogs only. We are a small facility with no room to handle cats. We offer boarding for dogs.

Adopting a friend

Our adoption fees vari depending on the dog. Adoptions include a free health visit with a Veterinarian, First Vaccination, Rabies Vaccination, Spay/Neuter, Jefferson County License, Collar, Leash, ID tag and a 5 lb. bag of Science Diet!

We are open 7 days a week from 8:30 - 4:00. Make sure you call before you come.
Directions:
Hwy 26 & Hwy 97 North (Redmond/Prineville) to Madras, turn RIGHT on "J" St. and follow it until you hit the round about. Take the first right, that will be Grizzly Rd.. Follow that about a mile. Take the SECOND RIGHT and you will see the shelter on the right. (if you hit gravel you went to far)
Hwy 26 & Hwy 97 South (Portland/The Dalles) to Madras, go into the town of Madras and turn LEFT on "J" St. (you will see taco time on the right side of the road). See the rest of directions above.

We have chosen Kuranda dog beds for our boarding facilities because they are so good for our dogs. We still don't have enough for all of our kennels. If you would like to donate a bed so another dog can sleep in proper comfort, please click here.
