We urgently need to find a forever home or at very least a foster home for this handsome, sweet boy who was rescued by AVA in May of 2007. Cisco is a quiet but vocal domestic short haired mitted tabby with blue green Siamese eyes. He is approximately 7-8 months old, has been fixed, and has had his shots. Actually that is where we think the problem started. We believe that he had a reaction to the anesthetic or shots and began having seizures intense enough to be considered grand mal seizures - very violent and very hard on his young body. The condition is now under control with pills prescribed by a vet that we use for our special needs cases. Cisco cannot be kept in a cage for the rest of his life. He needs to be able to run around like a normal cat and play. He doesn't eat much, as the pills suppress his appetite, but with the right care and home environment he will flourish and grow. Perhaps someone out there will open their heart to this very special boy who wants nothing more than to play, run, sleep, look out the windows at birds and squirrels. Who We Are
Welcome to the home page of Action Volunteers for Animals! Action Volunteers for Animals is just what its name suggests: an organization of people who are active on behalf of non-human animals, and who give their time and energy without monetary reward. AVA began in 1972 as a group of Toronto Humane Society workers who kept THS shelter animals alive during a strike of regular shelter staff. They decided to continue to work together after the strike ended, and to call themselves Action Volunteers For Animals. AVA became a registered charity in 1980. Our spay/neuter program was responsible for sterilizing and returning to good health, an average of 5.1 homeless and/or injured animals per day in 2004. We also help individuals on government subsidized income who are unable to cover their beloved pets’ veterinary expenses. 99% of all money raised goes directly into our vet fund!All this money is raised through our many fundraising efforts. Our funding comes from donations, membership fees, garage sales, and our annual Bazaar which is held each November. AVA receives no government funding, preferring to maintain its independence. .
Our organization serves Toronto and the surrounding area and helps animals in two ways: through hands-on work and through the promotion of animal rights Please note that AVA does not have a shelter but operates on a foster home basis therefore AVA will provide assistance to those who are willing to take an active part in the rescue of an animal, in other words, are willing to foster. Of course special consideration will be given to the elderly and infirm.

Cats, Cats, Cats
As always we are asking you, your family members and friends to open your homes and hearts to foster cats and/or kittens, and of course we are ALWAYS needing loving, permanent homes for the many cats we have up for adoption. Consider adding one or more wonderful and deserving felines to your family. We are also constantly seeking safe, warm and permanent homes for un –releasable ferals (for example, country barns).please call the AVA line 416-439-8770 if you know of a nice safe home for our feral felines.
Help, Help, Help
We desperately need “animal items” to sell at our event/fund raising tables. AVA does a lot of cat and dog shows, local festivals etc. besides giving out literature and info we try to raise as much money as possible by selling merchandise. Things that sell well are stuffed animals, animal books and figurines, cat and dog toys and treats and restaurant and entertainment gift certificates. Also wanted are other gift items (toiletries, gift baskets, candles etc) for raffles, and door prizes. Please call us if you have any new or gently used item’s to donate. 416-439-8770
We Need You!!!
Once again we are asking (begging) our members and volunteers to help us raise money. We try to have and hold at least one event a month but in the past few years it has been the same 5 or 6 people raising the money and organizing these fundraisers. If the work is not shared soon we might lose these most valuable volunteers to burn out. We need YOU to host and organize community events, garage and craft sales, raffles and other fundraisers. You can decide on where, when and what-involve your friends and family too-make it fun and you’ll be helping the animals at the same time. We’ll be happy to supply you with literature and donation boxes or advice if needed.

Adopting A Friend
There is an adoption process and there is an adoption fee that is designed to offset some and not all of the veterinarian costs to the charity, protect the pet and, in so being, is simply a token of good faith. AVA, to the best of it’s ability, tries to adopt these pets, who have been members of our foster families, to responsible pet owners, in other words, people who intended to have their pets altered in the first place and who will also want to treat the pets as members of their families. In other words, we know that these people will realize that the fee is no where near that charged by regular veterinarians.
All adult animals available for adoption are microchipped, vaccinated, neutered/spayed, dewormed and defleaed. Regarding kittens, they will have had their 1st needles and have been dewormed and defleaed at the time of adoption and arrangements and funding for the neutering/spaying and, microchipping will occur at appropriate time.
Feline Fees:
1 Feline Microchipped $150…..$250 for a pair
Special Need Felines – Negotiable…….We are a no-kill charity so we have many special need felines …..geriatrics, diabetics, amputees, mobility problems….inflammatory bowel(needs special diet)…..food allergy cats (need special diet)…..and there are many more categories……Need a challenge??? Adopt a Feral!
