WHO WE ARE

Introduction
We are a 501(c)3 non profit organization and have been in existence for about 30 years. We receive no funds from the county. Our organization is run solely by donations, memberships, and adoption fees.

~PREBLE COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY NEWS~

OUR SHELTER IS ONE YEAR OLD

The PET CENTER of the Humane Society of Preble County opened just over one year ago (November 19, 2006). The animal shelter is located at 951 S. Barron Street (Rt. 127 South) in Eaton, OH. (across the street from Carter Lumber).

The 9,400 square foot steel facility was built by John Buckley Contracting, Eaton, OH. The shelter has 40 adult dog runs, a puppy room designed with floor play pens, a cat room, isolation areas, a multi-purpose room used for puppy training classes, temperament testing, behavior modification and education. Rooms for food storage and preparation, night drop-off and get-acquainted rooms are also available in the new building.

Our new shelter offers the county animals proper ventilation, drainage systems, and a healthy environment. The kennel areas have been finished with a sealer to allow proper cleaning and disinfecting for the health and safety of the animals.

The Humane Society of Preble County is a separate tax exempt and charitable organization that is not related to the county or local government other than a working relationship with the county dog warden. The Humane Society must rely solely on charitable gifts to support the construction of this new shelter.

We still need to add cat condominiums and more dog runs. Please contribute to our ongoing efforts to provide a safe, humane and caring environment for Preble County's needy animals. The homeless dogs and cats need your financial help. Send your contributions to: Humane Society of Preble County, PO Box 72, Eaton, OH 45320.

RASCAL UNIT SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM FOR CATS AND RABBITS

Location: Gratis Fire Department in Gratis, OH. A mobile animal hospital comes to Preble County once every month. A board member of the Humane Society is the organizer for the unit and is scheduling appointments now. The RASCAL UNIT neuters cats and rabbits. Appointments are required. Call 937-787-4408 or email ltsmith@ameritech.net to make an appointment. Cost is $54 for females and $44 for males. This fee includes a rabies shot that is required at time of surgery. Fees for rabbits are a flat $50 for either sex.

There are so many unwanted cats and kittens in Preble County- and because of that there is so much needless suffering. Please do your part and have your cats and kittens spayed or neutered. Your cats will be healthier for it and you won't add to the homeless cat and kitten population.

ADOPTING OUR PETS

When adopting a pet from the Humane Society of Preble County we will ask you to fill out a form about you and your family and your reasons for wanting to adopt. Examples of the types of questions we will ask are: Do you have other animals in your house? Have you ever owned a pet before? Will your pet be kept indoors or out? These questions are designed to help our staff guide you to select the pet best suited to you and your lifestyle.

ADOPTION FEES

Adoption fees for dogs- please call the shelter at: 937/456-PETS (7387)

All our dogs have DHPP-C and Intra-Trac II vaccinations and they have been wormed.

The adoption fee for cats and kittens is $35. Our adoption fee for SENIOR CATS is $25.00.

All our cats have been vaccinated for FVRCP and they have been wormed.

RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS- The pull fee to Rescue Organizations is $25. If we spay or neuter the dog prior to rescue, other fees may apply. Please call for further information.

HOLD FEE FOR RETURNED DOGS

There is a non-refundable hold fee for dogs returned to the shelter from day 1 to day 7 after their adoption. The fee is $25 for puppies age 6 months or younger (at the time of adoption) and $10 for dogs older than 6 months (at the time of adoption). After day 7, no part of the adoption fee will be refunded.

FOSTERING PREGNANT DOGS OR CATS

Because we get many pregnant dogs and cats at our shelter we are always looking for foster families. Fostering is needed until the offspring reach adoptable ages. At that point the the mother and young ones can be brought back to the shelter and will be readied for adoption.

BECOME A MEMBER

Become a member of the Humane Society. Membership fees are $25 (Individual), $50 (Family), $100 (Patron). You'll get a newsletter approximately 4 times a year. Your membership fees are extremely important to us. They support, feed and care for the animals sheltered therein .

VOLUNTEERING AT THE SHELTER

We need volunteers to walk dogs, groom, clean cages, play with and socialize our charges. Call the shelter 937-456-7387 (PETS) for more information on volunteering.

CALL ME ONCE PROGRAM

If you would like to help the animals on an annual basis only, we have a "Call Me Once" program. You can help just once a year with a fundraiser. Call 937-456-PETS for more information.

WISH LIST

We are always in need of the following items: dog collars, leashes, rawhide chews, dog bones (edible treats), terry cloth towels, cat litter, litter boxes, feeding bowls, Arm and Hammer kitty litter deodorizer, cat toys, wicker baskets (large dinner plate size) for cats to sleep in. Monetary donations will go further if we receive donated cleaning, office and general supplies, such as bleach, Pine-Sol floor cleaner, antibacterial soap, air freshener, paper towels, small throw rugs, scouring pads, pens, Post-It notes, and postage stamps. Please drop off these much-needed items to the shelter during operating hours.
