Our Featured Pet...

All dogs are in need of wonderful homes!
Unfortunately, because of the huge numbers of dogs we get in, many dogs must be euthanized every week to make room for them. PLEASE spay or neuter your pet to help decrease the number of dogs that must be killed.
Because of the huge numbers of unwanted dogs in Meigs county, we cannot list a specific "featured pet" and be certain that it will be available.

News

Meigs County volunteers have increased efforts to find homes for these pups and dogs outside of this area, where there are people who desperately want dogs and pups just like we are overflowing with here. However, transport is a problem so drivers are sometimes needed. Also, another great need is for foster homes to keep a dog until it can go to the rescue.

Rescues!

We are rescue friendly and love for our dogs and puppies to go to any reputable rescue. Since we are totally county funded, we must adopt out locally if we have not worked with your rescue before. Even then, since every dog takes up a space that another one could live in, we usually cannot hold dogs. We would love to find foster homes and transport help but presently have none. Please do call the pound if you can save a dog and have a way to transport it soon. IF not speak with us, we have a new volunteer who does a lot of transports, she asks for a donation to help cover the cost of gas, but she can often help get the pups on their way! Calling the shelter is the best way to get the most up to date information!
We have one volunteer who takes the photographs & posts the pictures. She is often photographing the dogs ALONE, and it is very difficult, so please forgive us if they are poor quality. We understand how vital it is for anyone to see a dog before rescuing or adopting it, though, which is why we try to put up at least some image of each dog. IF you would like to see more photos of a particular dog, please email this volunteer at jrosler04@yahoo.com
For more information on helping out by fostering or transporting to rescues, adopters or even vet visits, or ideas on how you can help in other ways, call the shelter directly, or email jrosler04@yahoo.com AND meigscountydogshelter@yahoo.com .

Please Spay and Neuter Keep your animals healthy. Have your pets (Dogs/Puppies, Cats/Kittens, even Bunnies) Spayed or Neutered! Check out the RASCAL Mobile Animal Clinic What is RASCAL? Please click on the Calendar link to find a clinic near you, and keep checking back for more updates!

Sandy Stealey continues to help Meigs dogs by contacting some individual rescues and also by photographing dogs when she can get time away from her own rescue, "CanineWorks" on the other side of Meigs Co. Thank you, Sandy! We have 2 other families who dedicate a lot of time & energy into the dog shelter. Thanks to those 2 families also!
Please let Tom the dog warden (or leave a message with the assistant dog warden or answering machine) if you can take a dog. It will NOT be held, necessarily and we can NOT call each rescue before each dog is euthanized so it is vital that you arrange to get the dogs out as soon as possible. The situation in this county is truly critical so please do check out the dog pound but also please confine and alter your dogs so your puppy or dog won't continue to add to the problem.

The Doggie Do-Gooders Do It Again

Columbus Dog Connection made elevated beds, to keep the dogs off the cement. Please read more on how you can help or see the directions to make your own, plus how Habitat for Dogmanity 3 changed our shelter at ColumbusDogConnection.com. We can't even begin to express our thanks to everyone who made this project such a success! Thank you CDC for your amazing generosity and wonderful ideas! The dogs love the beds!

Donate a Kuranda Dog Bed

Donate a BedOur dogs would love a warm, dry bed to sleep on while they await their forever homes here at the shelter. Kuranda beds have proven over and over to have a calming effect and to lower the stress levels of kenneled dogs and to provide the soft, warm, off the floor comfort all dogs deserve. If you would like to donate a bed to us, click here.

Who We Are

We are a rescue friendly shelter in Southeast Ohio, about 2 hours south of Columbus. We try to unite lost dogs with their owners and find homes for all the loving dogs that come to our shelter. But there are just too many. A separate group in Meigs county supports and pays for a small number of spays and neuters each year but the larger problem is lack of funds to house, vaccinate, worm, and even bathe these dogs. There also aren't enough hours in the work day for the dog warden to pick up strays, deal with legal dog cases and enforce existing dog confinement and ownership laws. We need help and you can make a difference by adopting just one dog. We can't do that without your help. If you can't adopt, please have your current pets spayed or neutered. It saves lives! The shelter holds dogs for as long as possible, sometimes only 5 days, then they are put to sleep. However, every effort is made for these dogs to go to rescue.

Adopting a friend

Come in and see our wonderful dogs and puppies. See a new friend? Talk to the dog warden. The shelter will not adopt to breeders or "collectors" and has the right to refuse adoption when it is in the best interest of the dog not to go with them. This pound is old and in very poor shape and we want to get dogs out. Please call for anything you would like to know. Please leave a message if no answer! Your call will be returned!
