What the Animals receive at the Independence Animal Shelter:> Cats and Kittens: . All Cats and Kittens are tested for feline Leukemia Virus before being adopted out .FCRCP vaccine and worming are also given. If they have fleas coming into the shelter they are treated immediately so as not to spread fleas in the shelter. They are treated for ear mites also.

DOGS:
Vaccine - Dhpp
Worming -for internal parasites
heartworm test Rabies Vaccination Checked and treated for fleas if needed. The number one reason for getting rid of a pet is " We are moving and cant take fluffy with us (even though we have had fluffy 9 years) It is not fair to the animal. The other big reason is " we are having a baby" that too is NOT a reason to dump a pet. THINK BEFORE you adopt! realize this animal is a part of the family and i am sure you wouldnt dump your kid cause you were moving!
If you feel you might then get a stuffed animal. Our beloved animals deserve better. ALL animals are neutered whenever possible, but we need support and donations to continue doing this. Please help. If you adopt a pet pay it forward to the next pet that needs it ! Donations can be sent to the Emerald Animal Hospital on Ridge Road. That is where the shelter Animals recieve all their medical care. They also often have kittens and such for adoption.

News

With The holidays around the corner please don't forget about your pets. There is going to be a lot of holiday foods out that can make you pet sick. Remember to tell friends and relatives that your pet does not need to eat ham and other things that can make him sick! Also chocolates and candies are not good for your pet. Tinsil can be dangerous to cats ! Keep your pet safe this holiday season. If you want to get a friend or relative a pet for Christmas PLEASE make sure that they want the responsiblity. Perhaps give them a coupon for a pet and get it after the holidays are over when you have the proper time! HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Do not let your dog or cat run at large. This is not only dangerous for your pet it is dangerous for people and cars. Be courteous.
Also remember you are responsible for your pet. If it deficates while on a walk PLEASE PICK IT UP! Also do NOT allow your dog to urinate in OTHERS yards. Even Male dogs do NOT need to mark every tree and bush. AGAIN PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL of others property!
HEAT STROKE CAN occur on even a fall day if your pet is left in the car. Temperatures in a car heat up fast even with a window cracked. If you are going to be leaving your car PLEASE leave your pet at home!!!!!

Many cities are banning dogs in parks and such because DISRESPECTFUL OWNERS DO NOT CLEAN UP after their pets. IF YOU walk your dog PLEASE PICK UP .. LETS not have dogs banned from every park because you are too lazy or embarassed or disrespectful to clean up after your dog .

Remember ~ ALL dogs and puppies can benefit from Dog Obedience classes~ it is a way to socialize your dog and allow him / her to make some friends and also a great opportunity for you to find folks with similar interests. A good class with an experienced instructor can make or break the training of your pet to become a good canine citizen.

Please feel free to contact the shelter for more information!

Who We Are

Independence Animal Control Shelter is a division of The Independence Police Department.

Is a small community shelter and its purpose is to help the stray/ unclaimed animals found within the city limits to find new loving " forever" homes. The shelter also serves many other functions some of which follow: It is a way to help people and animals live together in harmony. It is there to protect the pet owner, the victim and the animals. It is there to provide educational programs to our community and schools, senior groups etc.

It is there to investigate animal related incidents such as abuse, cruelty ( now that there has been a link found between animal abuse and child abuse) and to help people better understand proper care of pets and wildlife alike. It is there to rescue sick and injured animals both domestic and wild. We provide a lost and found service within the community. We are there to also help and advise residents on nuisance wildlife condtions and how to humanely keep the wild life in the wild and out of our homes.
