Who We Are

Huron County Humane Society was founded in 1953 by Roselle Ward, one year before the Humane Society of the United States was formed. Our mission is to provide shelter for abandonded, neglected and abused animals in Huron County.
The Huron County Humane Society serves the residents of Huron County. We are a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization overseen by a Board of Directors. Monies funding Huron County Humane Society are from private contributions, membership dues and fundraising efforts of the Board of Directors and Volunteers.

Lost your pet?

Call the HCHS shelter at 419-663-7158 We will write down its description & your number, in case the person who finds it calls us. We will also keep an eye out for it in case someone brings it in.

Call the Huron County Dog Pound at 419-668-9773 They will also do the same as above.

Call the Norwalk Reflector at 419-668-3771 They will run a lost ad for free for 3 days. If you call before 3 pm, it will run the next day.

Tell your neighbors. If they see your pet, they will know you are looking for it.

Post flyers with a picture of your pet in your neighborhood A picture will work much faster than just a written description. Include your phone number.

Leave your pet’s bed or carrier in your yard Place an additional item that smells like him or her with it. The scent may lead it back home. This is extremely important if you lose your pet while out with it somewhere. In this case, place these items where you were last with your pet.

Found a pet?

Call the HCHS Shelter at 419-663-7158. We will write down its description & your number, in case the person who lost it calls us. Depending on where you found the pet, we can give you phone numbers to other neighboring Humane Societies.

Call the Huron County Dog Pound at 419-668-9773. They will also do the same if you have found a dog. If it has a dog license, they will look up the number & give you the owner’s information. If the dog does not have a tag, they will make arrangements with you to take it into the dog pound to find the owner. If the owner cannot be found within 72 hours, they will put it up for adoption. If the dog has a license and the Dog Pound is closed, call the Huron County Sheriff’s office at 419-663-2828 and they will look up the owner’s information for you.

Call the Norwalk Reflector at 419-668-3771. They will run a found ad for free for 3 days. If you call before 3 pm, it will run the next day.

Call the HCHS shelter to schedule a drop-off of the animal. We schedule incoming animals by appointment to make sure we have room for them. You may have to house your found furry creature for a little while until we can get them in. Call and schedule as soon as possible. If you end up finding the owner or a suitable adoptive family, we have absolutely no problem with you canceling your appointment.

Friendly Reminder:
Almost all of this can be avoided if you make sure your dog wears a current Huron County Dog License.
If your cat is allowed outside, make sure it is wearing an expandable collar with a tag that includes your phone number.
