Our Adorable Adoptable Dogs

Our Featured Doggy...

Meet the Jetsons! Astro and his brother Elroy are 6y/o English Pointers who have been together all their lives. They were dumped at an urban shelter in RI by a neglectful owner who never gave them heartworm preventive. Consequently, both boys were HW+ and would have been put down if not for the extraordinary kindness and generosity of the shelter director who paid for their treatment out of her own pocket and transported the boys to their foster home in PA.

Astro and Elroy are now happy, healthy dogs who are enjoying all the comforts of a loving foster home. Their foster mom reports that both dogs are perfect gentlemen in the house and are fully housetrained. Astro is very good on leash, but Elroy is still very rambunctious. These sweeties are so full of love! They deserve a loving, responsible FOREVER home! Will you help us right the happy ending for the Jetson brothers? We guarantee you'll find life with Astro and Elroy OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Who We Are

Out Of Pounds Canine Rescue is a small organization dedicated to saving the lives of stray and unwanted dogs at high risk of euthanasia in overcrowded shelters. We work closely with municipal pounds, animal control facilities and humane organization, primarily in the south and midwest, where pet overpopulation is a severe epidemic We strive to rescue those dogs that are typically overlooked because they are shy, scared, older or who need housetraining/obedience. We are also strong advocates for controlling pet overpopulation. ALL dogs coming into our program will be spayed or neutered and fully vetted before they are adopted into loving, responsible forever homes.

Adopting a friend

To ensure successful placements of our rescue dogs, Out Of Pounds Canine Rescue asks potential adopters to undergo a four step screening process. We believe that those people who are willing to follow through with the adoption screening process are demonstrating their commitment to responsible dog ownership. The following steps are required to complete the screening/ adoption process.
1. Complete the adoption application and return it to Out Of Pounds Canine Rescue
2. We will contact your veterinarian and personal references.
3. We will contact you by phone to set up an interview in your home.
4. We will schedule a time for you to meet the dog in its foster home.
5. If you are approved to adopt the dog, we will ask you to read and sign an adoption contract and to make a specified financial contribution to cover some of the expenses associated with rescuing the dog. Ownership of the dog is transferred to the adopter when the donation is paid and the contract is signed.

Save a life! Volunteer!

Adoption isn't the only way you can help dogs in danger of being euthanized. Here are some other ways you can help.!

* FOSTERING: Consider taking a rescue dog into your home temporarily. Fostering allows dogs to leave the stress of shelter life and to acclimate once again to living in a home. Some dogs need house training and perhaps a crash course in "indoor ettiquette". Many of these unlucky pups have lived at the end of a chain all their lives. Others have been house dogs and were either lost or turned in because the owners' situations have changed. Fostering is the key to healing the hurts that these dogs have endured and to preparing them to be well-behaved house pets for new, loving families.!

* DRIVING: Most of the dogs coming into Out Of Pounds Canine Rescue are pulled from shelters in the Southeast. They then embark on a long journey that takes place in "legs". There are several rescue networks that provide transportation for shelter dogs entering rescue programs all over the United States. Often, the eastern networks can bring dogs as far as PA, NJ or the NYC area. Without drivers to complete the last leg of their long journey, we cannot pull them from shelters into our program. If you have a valid drivers license and a vehicle that can accommodate one or two dogs (in travel crates), please consider transporting. Drivers are literally a lifeline for shelter dogs coming into rescue programs!

*FUND-RAISING: You can donate your time and ideas to help OOPCR raisne money! By helping us obtain funding through fund-raisers such as selling homemade dog biscuits or raffle tickets, or by researching grants, you will be saving the lives of many dogs who would otherwise be put down. OOPCR must raise money to pay for spaying and neutering our rescue dogs and providing other essential vet care including routine vaccinations, worming, etc. The more money we raise, the more dogs we can save!

*GOT SKILLS? OPCR is also in need of dedicated volunteers to serve on our Board Of Directors, help with bookkeeping, record keeping, website development, etc. If you're interested in volunteering in any capacity please contact us by phone or email.
