"UPDATES" to the pet list are made on the day we receive or loose a dog. Our list is current within hours.
Who We Are
The Town of Highlands Pound is part of the municipal government and not a humane society or shelter for homeless animals. We do our best not to euthanize and to hold on to our animals as long as possible. Our pound has only 4 outside cages and 4 inside. We have a large fenced in yard for our dogs to exercise.
Adopting a Friend
Adoptions are arranged to suit the animal and new owner. We do not have set rules, except, dogs must be immunized, neutered and if, staying in NYS, a state license must be purchased before leaving the pound. The cost of immunization is usually about $60 and the license cost is about $16 and the neutering can be done for $30 with a state certificate/voucher.
Volunteering and Donations
The town allows 2 part-time employees for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (on call plus daily pound care and cleaning). Donations are accepted, monetary, food, and equipment. Young volunteers in need of supervision cannot be accepted as the town will not allow time for its employees to supervise.

Visitation is by appointment, only. Pound operates with part time officers and has no set hours of operation.
Directions from anywere: Fort Montgomery and our pound is located just off of Route 9W in NYS. We are minutes from Bear Mountain State Park and the USMA at West Point. ****PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NOT LOCATED IN ULSTER COUNTY. That is another township called Highland, N.Y.
