ABOUT US:
The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter boasts one of the highest adoption rates in the nation. Animal Control Officers respond to over 6,000 requests for service, including 500 night emergency calls, every year. We strive to maintain a clean and healthy facility for the humane care and housing of stray and abandoned dogs, and to find a new home for each of our animals that are deemed suitable pets. The shelter operates under Section 1, Chapter 152 of the Code of the Town of Hempstead.
ADOPTION FEES:
Adoption Fee - Dogs: $85.00
Adoption Fee - Cats: $75.00

ANNUAL RABIES CLINIC AND PET ADOPTION FAIR:
Cats and dogs can get rabies, which is an extremely serious disease. That's why the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is hosts an annual Rabies Clinic in partnership with the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association. At this year's event, which was held on October 4, 2008, just under 300 pets were vaccinated against rabies and 40 pets were adopted from our shelter. In addition, over 50 pets were microchipped.
PET MICROCHIPPING:All dogs and cats adopted from our shelter will be chipped free of charge before leaving the shelter. Pets that already have a loving home can be microchipped for a $25 fee (cash or check only). Our microchipping hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary, but we recommend that you call ahead for availability. Call our Animal Shelter staff at (516) 785-5220 for further details.
Pet microchips, as small as a grain of rice, contain a unique registration identification number associated with your pet. If your “chipped” dog or cat ever gets loose and is brought to any shelter nationwide, your pet can be scanned for your contact information, helping to quickly reunite you with your furry family member.
HUMANE EDUCATION/PET THERAPY PROGRAM:
We offer a free, educational program to any organization within the Town of Hempstead called The Humane Education/Pet Therapy Program. With the help of our highly-trained therapy dogs, Channel, Brandi, Frankie and Monte, Humane Educators discuss how to be safe around dogs, review the four basic laws of owning a dog in New York State and discuss responsible pet ownership. To schedule a visit call (516)785-0197.
