Pet of the Month

Our pet of the month introduces himself...

Hi! My name is Darla. I am a 10 year old Pit Bull mix. I was brought into the shelter after my human mommy passed away and there was no one left to care for me. I was very confused when I first got here but now I understand that everyone here loves me and will take good care of me. I am a very laid back girl and am looking for a laid back family to give me a new home. I walk well on a leash and would be perfectly happy spending most of my time lounging around with my new mom or dad. I love people, big and small and get so excited when I have visitors. Sometimes I get so excited I wag my tail so much that it bangs into my kennel and bleeds a little. But I just love people so much that I can't help it!! Alot of people that come here to the animal shelter say they could never adopt me because I am a Pit Bull, and Pit Bulls are bad. I don't know where they get that idea from! I think that I am a very well behaved, loving, loyal girl! I don't have a bad bone in my body!! I just keep hoping that someone will come along that can see past my age and breed and realize what a great companion I will make for them. Could you be just the person I've been wishing for?? ]

We had great success at the Greenport Maritime Festival . Thanks to all who helped!!

The mission of the League is to provide humane care and treatment for all the animals needing protection in our community, The Town of Southold. We are the only East End shelter with the commitment and courage to take on the difficult task of providing animal care and control for ALL the homeless and needy animals within our community while maintaining a limited euthanasia policy. Never is a Healthy, adoptable animal killed for the sole crime of being homeless. Spay/Neuter and Humane education are two of the most important tools utilized in the fulfillment of our mission. THERE IS NO SHELTER LIKE A HUMANE COMMUNITY.

Other basic functions of Southold Animal Shelter include locating owners of lost animals and homes for homeless animals. The Southold Animal Shelter keeps current records on all animals in our community reported as lost or found or for adoption.

In connection with placing animals for adoption, each animal leaving the Shelter is vaccinated, tested for Heartworm and for FIV/FELV, wormed and spayed or neutered by NFAWL prior to adoption,

On a weekly basis, shelter staff and animals are taken to various nursing homes and care facilities to provide companionship to elderly residents as a form of pet therapy.
