Donations

There are lots of ways you can help make a difference! Please consider helping out with a cash donation. We are a non-profit, tax exempt organization. Your donation can be claimed for tax purposes. When you give to the Humane Society of Rome, or remember us in your will, you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are playing a direct role in the care we provide for the many homeless cats and dogs that come through our doors. Providing quality care on a year round basis is not cheap or easy but we do it. We have our Wish List below. Any of those items, especially food, litter, detergent, bleach and blankets really help us. Please help however you can. Thank you.

Sponsorship

Would you like to help our cats and dogs without actually adopting one? Please consider becoming a sponsor. We realize that not everyone can adopt. We have now set-up a program that allows anyone interested in helping us care for our many furry friends to sponsor one. it only costs $15 per month or $40 for three months. You'll get a picture of "your" cat or dog and an update on them if they get adopted. You can also come down and visit with your sponsor. Most importantly, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are playing a direct role in the caring for a particular cat or dog. Call the shelter today to start your sponsorship.

Volunteers

We're a small shelter that accomplishes many big things. We are able to do this with the help and support of the community and our great volunteers. If you have a desire to help our homeless cats and dogs, or a particular talent that could help our Shelter, we have a place for you! We also welcome ideas. If you have a project in mind, a fund raising idea or a way to help our homeless animals, please get in touch. If you are looking to earn credit for a community service or scouting project, this may be the opportunity you are looking for. Please stop by our shelter and ask how you can help. You can also call 315-336-7070 to learn how you can get involved in this extremely rewarding opportunity. All of us thank you for your support.

Memorials, Honorariums, Birthdays, Anniversaries

When you make a donation on behalf of a special occasion, or person, we offer the individualized service of sending a card along with your acknowledgement of such a donation. It offers a special touch while giving the sender credit for their tax deduction. This is a wonderful way to remember and show how much you care.

Employee Matching Grant Program

Do you work for a company that has a Matching Grant Program? Check with your Human Resources Office to see if this option is available for you to double your donation for our homeless animals! If your place of work doesn't have a matching grants program, consider organizing a drive or fund raiser.

Foster Homes Needed

Do you have an extra place in your home and your heart to take in an animal? Our Foster Parents help animals on a short-term basis with care and rehabilitation for maternity, medical or abusive reasons. Do you have a specialty area that you might be willing to share with us? Are you a nurse, a retired breeder, a trainer, or just a person who likes puppies and kittens? Would you like to offer one of our long-term residents a little hiatus from shelter life in your home for a few weeks so that they might come back all refreshed and ready to wait for their new family in better spirits? Our foster homes help us to be a bigger facility than our walls permits while offering more individualized care. Please call us at 315-336-7070 to inquire about this very fulfilling and personal way to volunteer that helps us save many lives every year.

ASPCA Anti-Cruelty Resource Center

Please Adopt a Shelter Dog!

Hi, my name is Kathy! I'm a beautiful brindle and white pit/boxer mix. I'm friendly and affectionate, and I whine when I don't get enough attention. I am also very playful--I could play ball for hours! Since I'm such a sweetheart, won't you please take me home with you?

Our Adoption Process

We sincerely hope that we can be of service to you. Anyone interested in adopting a cat or dog must first fill out a screening application. Our application is designed to help us determine if the adoption is in yours and the animal’s best interest and to place our animals into permanent responsible homes. We want to assist you in finding the pet most compatible with your lifestyle. Because the animal’s welfare must be our foremost consideration, HSR reserves the right to deny any adoption. Staff will review your application to ensure that the animal is going to a good home and that it is also the "right" animal for you. We want each adoption to be a good match. If for whatever reason it doesn't work out, please bring the animals back to us.

The cost to adopt is:
Cats (already altered) - $70.00 Kittens (and cats not altered) - $90.00* Dogs (already altered) - $85.00 (plus a NYS license fee of $12.50-17.50-20.50 depending upon the dog) Puppies (and dogs not altered) - $140* (plus a NYS license fee of $12.50-17.50-20.50 depending upon the dog) *Cost includes refundable deposit as per NYS Spay/Neuter Law - $35 for cats, $55 for dogs
In addition, you will be given a free training tips DVD, a $29 value endorsed by The Humane Society of the United States.

Senior/AARP Discounts:
Seniors (65+) and AARP members get a 20% discount on all animals adopted that are at least one (1) year or older.
Seniors (65+) and AARP members get a 50% discount on all animals adopted that are seven (7) years or older.

Other Discounts:
Our adoption fee has been cut for long-term cats and dogs that have been at the shelter a few months. HSR staff will determine if you are eligible for any discount.

Once an application is approved, often the same day, animals can be adopted out and go home with their new family. If the animal is not spayed/neutered, we will ask the adopter to set up a surgery date with their vet. After surgery, please provide a copy of the spay/neuter certificate and the NYS Spay/Neuter deposit will be refunded.
