Our Featured Pet...

Ruffian is a male orange tabby about 2 years old. He will knock you out with love! His charming way of head-butting you can push you off a chair! He was found as a kitten living on the train tracks in Shearwater and eating from the garbage in the Tim Horton's drive through. I trapped his family and found homes for some of them right away. Ruffian was quite feral and needed extra time and attention from me, so he lived here for about 6 months of kitty therapy before we attempted to find him an adoptive home. We thought he was so lucky when he was adopted the first time, only to be returned 48 hours later, because the humans were not patient enough to wait for him to come out from under the furniture. They wanted a lap cat right away, and I had explained that he would be extremely shy at first and it would take time to gain his trust.. Then he found another home, with a sweet elderly couple. But he escaped through the dryer vent in their mobile home and ran away. I was heartbroken, thinking of this lovely cat who had become so accustomed to love and attention from me, now back on the streets to fend for himself... He was gone for 6 months, and they called me when they spied Ruffian under their neighbour's trailer! So I went back and caught him and it was a joyful reunion. He was RE-tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, but had caught nothing worse than a few fleas during his half-year long escapade. Ruffian loves to curl up with you in bed at night and give you headbutts. He needs a home of his own! Won't you please come meet him in purr-son?

News Right now I am not able to take in anymore cats. Living alone and working full-time makes it difficult to provide the care each cat needs. So for the next few months, I will be focusing on adoptions, finding homes for the mostly adult cats. Trap, Neuter, Return: We have been working on a new colony of feral cats in the Myrtle St., Dartmouth area. The rescue efforts include providing TNR help to the really wild ones and getting the adoptable ones out of there to find their Forever Homes. We recently released Wilma, Zappa and Butterfly back to the colony as much healthier cats who will never have anymore unwanted kittens! We have right now a beautiful kitten aproximately 6 months old who we had intended on returning her to her colony, but from the time she got back from the vet hospital from her surgery, she has become a very loving cat. She is very sweet now, and would like to be adoopted with her friend Anna. The name "Xtrema" is because she was extremely scared when we first met her.

Who We Are

Sonya’s Cat & Animal Rescue Society Mission Statement: To rescue and help heal the scars left on felines that are living as strays or ferals, whether the scars be physical or emotional. We provide love, food, shelter, veterinary care, and finally more love, to the cats that come into our care. Our goals include: • Rescue stray and feral cats from a harsh life outside and try to rehabilitate them • Find loving adoptive homes for the friendly cats • Humanely trap feral cats and help to rehabilitate them – if they do not turn out to be adoptable, we would do a Trap, Neuter, Return program. • To educate the public about proper animal care • To promote spaying and neutering pets to prevent further overpopulation History Sonya’s Cat & Animal Rescue Society is a rescue that helps abandoned, stray and feral cats and kittens. In the 5 yearsprior to starting this rescue, , I had rescued about 140 cats, usually paying out of my own wallet to provide veterinary care, food and shelter to these poor creatures, before finding them loving adoptive homes. Since it began for real in May 2006, I have helped 114 cats and kittens. I am a private citizen who rescues cats in my own home and renovated workshop. I have been a volunteer for other animal rescue organizations, and I have decided to start another organization. We need to cover costs of the cats currently in our care. As I am not currently registered as a non-profit society, due to residential zoning restrictions, I am seeking an appropriate commercial location to carry out my work. Right now, there is NO SHELTER - we are merely a network of concerned citizens that take in stray cats and provide vet care, spay or neuter, and foster the cats in our own homes until we find proper permanent adoptive homes for the cats.

Adopting a friend

The adoption process will involve completing a thorough application prior to approval. The adopter will complete a contract upon adoption of the cat. You are not BUYING a cat - I must stress that it is not a purchase price, but an adoption donation (we suggest a donation of $150). This fee will include: • Testing for Feline Leukemia and FIV • 2 full sets of vaccinations at 6 & 9 weeks (possibly 3 vaccines if kittens are still here at 12 weeks) • Deworming and parasite care • Advantage or Revolution flea treatment • Spaying or neutering plus the cat/kitten will have been treated for any existing problems, such as upper respiratory infections. While the cats are in our care, we will cover the cost of food, litter, shelter and general health care (ie: to treat infections or injuries). Each cat can cost well over $300 to care for, so we feel $150 is a reasonable adoption fee to request. The fee covers all the start–up veterinary costs of getting a new cat; that way we are assured the people adopting these precious creatures are willing to bring it to the vet regularly. We intend to prevent further litters of unwanted kittens by having our kittens spayed and neutered at an early age, prior to being adopted.
