Our Animals
Many of the animals brought in are "given up" by owners who either cannot or will not care for them any longer. Others are "stray"--lost or abandoned and brought to us by people who find them. Many are injured, many are ill, and sadly, many have been neglected, or abused, or both. Hundreds are "surplus", "extra" and are brought to us by people who cannot find homes for them.
All of them are beautiful.
Our Work
Our work is about caring. For many animals, the care and love their receive here is more than they have ever known. In this, their temporary home, they receive nourishment, blankets, and toys. As we are able, we mend broken bones, treat illness, and help heal injuries. For the time they are here, we are their safe refuge.
Our work is also about being careful. For many animals too young, or that have special needs, foster homes provide the extra time and help needed until they are ready to be placed in a permanent home.
For all our animals available for adoption, our goal is not to place every animal anywhere, but each animal into a well-matched, loving home. This is a part of dedicated effort to stop the revolving door of unwanted, discarded pets in our community, through a committed and careful Adoption Program.
And always, our work is about respect, kindness and compassion for all life, be it a mouse, a puppy, and aged dog or a two footed animal. With 7,000 animals coming to us every year, this is not always easy. And all that we do would not be possible without your support.
Thank you for being a part of us.
Mission Statement
Guided by the humane ethic, and in recognition of the bond between humans and animals, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society exists to promote humane principles, compassionate care, and prevention of cruelty to animals by:
- Providing humane care and treatment to the animals brought to the Shleter by private citizens and animal control;
- Offering educational and volunteer programs to encourage awareness, understanding, and practice of the humane principle;
- Advocating for the interest and welfare of animals and protected animals from neglect, abuse, and expoitation;
- Inspiring awareness and compassion for all living things.
Who We Are
Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week animals are brought to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society. As the largest animals shelter in northern New Mexico, an average of 7,000 animals come through our doors every year.
They are young, they are old, and they are every age in between. In our commitment to never refuse or turn away any animal in need, the Shelter receives animals from throughout Santa Fe, Espanola, as far north as Taos and the Four Corners and as far south as Las Cruces. Wherever they come from, we are here for them.
Adopting a friend
We're very pleased that you're considering adopting a future family member from us. We're confident that we can match you with just the right animal for your lifestyle and desires. It all starts with the Adoption Application which you can complete when you come down to the shelter. We'll begin processing your application as soon as we receive it, and will notify you of approval (usually within one week). If you should choose an animal,
we will put a hold on it as soon as we have your application and try to process your application within 24 hours.
Once your approved Application is on file, you're ready to find your 4-footed friend. Come into the Shelter at your earliest convenience and visit our animals (or look at a few of our critters on-line); when you find the perfect pet, just let the front office staff know, and you can complete your adoption paperwork, collect the fee, and schedule your new best friend for surgery -- usually within one or two days. The adoption fee also includes a discounted health check at a veteranian in
the area on our list of participating veteranarians, vaccinations (including Rabies if the animal is old enough), a collar, an ID tag, your Santa Fe City or County license, and discounts on both Obedience Training Club training classes.

- Animals brought in as stray and claimed by their owner are also spayed or neutered. The cost: $25 or free.
