We are a Nonprofit, Volunteer group. Your donations enable us to help people spay and neuter feral and stray cats, and to support adoptable cats that are in our care.

We know that it can be stressful for some people to visit shelters when you are looking for a new addition to your family. So many cats need homes, and that leaves good-hearted people with feelings of guilt, because "we can't adopt them all." Communities Altering The Strays has the solution. We bring our cats to visit YOU, in YOUR OWN HOME. Based on the information that you supply on your application, and after a personal consultation, we will arrange to visit you with several cats that would fit into your home environment. Selecting a new companion then rests on "human/cat bonding" -- it's unexplainable but it often happens instantly.

Please open your heart and home to wonderful cat or kitten. They will reward you with unquestionable love and devotion.

Would you like learn more about our cats, or arrange to have them visit you in the comfort of your home?

Please click the PRE-ADOPTION APPLICATION link above. By filling out this form, you can tell us which cat(s) interests you, or what type of cat you are looking for. We always have, or know of, cats that are newly rescued, but are not yet posted--they're still camera shy!

A pre-adoption application is required so that we can begin to match you up with a friendly feline!

MOST OF OUR CATS ARE ADOPTED WITH A FREE MICROCHIP--NEVER BE SEPARATED FROM YOUR CAT AGAIN!

OUR MISSION

To help you help the strays! To reduce animal population! To reduce euthanasia in shelters! Communities Altering The Strays (CATS) is dedicated to reducing the population of cats, humanely, through education and spaying and neutering - not euthanasia.

WHAT WE DO

We provide assistance and advice to groups or individuals that want to help homeless cats. By providing instructional and educational materials, along with various sources of low-cost spay/neuter services, we have already made a great impact on the number of homeless cats.

YOU WANT TO HELP THE CATS BUT YOU ARE AFRAID THAT THE CATS WILL BE TAKEN AWAY AND EUTHANIZED.

We know how you feel. You've tried and tried to find help. The cats are multiplying and you don't know what to do. The shelters, rescue groups, and even animal control do their best. They can't respond to all the calls because there are just too many animals.

IT IS NOT OUR POLICY TO ACCEPT CATS FROM THE PUBLIC

Though we do not take in cats, we can offer you suggestions that will help you find a home for your personal cat, or a stray cat that you may have found. We can keep your information on file and will refer people to you if they are looking for a cat that fits your cat's description. It can take some time and effort to find new placement for cats, but with some persistance you should be able to find a good home for your cat.

We are not a shelter and do not believe that more shelters are the answer to solving the overpopulation crisis. If less animals are born, then shelters will be less crowded, and less animals will euthanized. We, instead, focus our efforts on educating people about spaying and neutering animals, preventing litters, and providing better lives for the cats.

We give special attention to independent rescuers who want to learn about TNR (trap/neuter/return). We promote the TNR guidelines from Alley Cat Allies and receive many inquiries based on their referrals.

Every inquiry receives individual attention (one-on-one) and we are available to answer your questions and to help you follow all of the guidelines until you have successfully reached your goal in your own cat rescue endeavor. We also have many valuable resources on our web site that will provide answers to your questions about finding low-cost spay/neuter programs, the trapping procedure, return process, taming for adoption, and suggestions on finding homes for your socialized cats.

If you need some questions answered, just email us or give us a call!

WHO WE ARE

WE ARE SPAY & NEUTER ADVOCATES!

We are volunteers that help people to help stray cats.
Communities Altering The Strays (CATS) is a nonprofit, no-kill, volunteer, educational, and information resource center that assists people who are seeking answers to questions about stray cats, hard-strays, feral cats, and family pets.

Communities Altering The Strays (CATS) is a group endeavor. The group of people that make up the growing "CATS family" have all, for many years, been active in some type of animal welfare. Many of us have volunteered for animal shelters or rescue groups, and were (or still are) active in trapping, fostering, and doing adoptions. Some of our volunteers come from a veterinary background, or are active in the rehabilitative field. Some people within our group have formed, or helped to form, small rescue groups in their own communities. We have all joined together because we all have one thing in common:

WE WANT TO HELP STRAY CATS!

WHY DO WE DO THIS?

We can't help ourselves! Basically, it's very simple. We love to help people and we love cats.

We know exactly how you feel when you see a hungry cat in your yard or at your workplace. You start to feed the cat. He looks so hungry, so cold, so alone. As if overnight, you have two cats. Then soon you start to see kittens. You feel helpless. What do you do now?

We've been there. We've searched for help when the shelters "can't take in any more." We've called rescue groups so overwhelmed in finding homes for their own cats that they don't have the time to answer phone inquiries. There are just too many cats and not enough homes for all of them.

Animal control officers, rescue groups, and shelters don't want to remove or displace cats that already have caretakers. It just doesn't make sense. No one wants to see cats euthanized just because there isn't any place to keep them.

If you don't mind caring for the strays, and if there are no municipal laws preventing the strays from remaining in their current environment, we can advise you how you can help them live healthier and happier lives.

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED

During our past years and involvement in the animal rescue field, we have met some wonderful and compassionate people. More people are standing up for the rights of cats and making life better for cats in their backyards, neighborhoods, and communities.

Our experience has shown that most people are willing to do whatever they can to help homeless cats as long as they know what to do. We will encourage you and support you because we have seen that

ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

"I am only one.

But still I am one.

I cannot do everything,

But still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do something I can do." --Edward Everett Hale

One person can save the life of a homeless cat and can prevent the needless suffering and deaths of kittens by spaying or neutering JUST ONE CAT.

Saving just one stray won't change the world...
But surely the world will change for that one stray!

EDUCATION

We receive inquiries every day from people that are dealing with their cat's behavioral problems or are interested in helping stray cats. We are happy to answer your inquiries, speak to you on the telephone, answer your questions via e-mail, and/or send out literature that might help you.

We have made many friends in New Jersey, and also in some of our surrounding states! Through our friends and contacts, we now communicate with a large network of individuals, shelters, and other rescue groups throughout the United States that practice Trap/Neuter/Release (T/N/R). We are also pleased to have been instrumental in the formation of a couple of rescue groups within New Jersey.

Our contacts share their "success stories" and accomplishments. Through this network of caring, we are always learning new techniques, tricks of the trade, helpful hints, and advice to pass along to other fellow rescuers.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Contact us! There are many ways that you can help homeless cats even if you don't want to start your own rescue group. If you would like to help our organization trap, foster, or find homes for cats, we'd love to hear from you. If you'd like to start your own group, contact us! We can help you along the way.

Communities Altering The Strays supports the NO-KILL philosophy. No cat within our reach will ever be euthanized for the sake of convenience, or to make room for other cats. Euthanasia (death to end suffering) is reserved only for cats that are in an advanced stage of suffering and are beyond medical help.

We can not accept cats from the public. We focus our efforts on cats that we have rescued during our safe-trapping projects. Though some of these cats were located in feral cat colonies, the kittens and friendly, lost or abandoned cats are offered for adoption. These cats are currently living in foster homes and many are offered for adoption through our veterinarians. Working together with veterinarians to reduce the number of stray cats has been both rewarding and educational for us. We offer "courtesy listings" to veterinary facilities and will post their cats for adoption. We'd like to give exposure to veterinarians that have cats for adoption so that those cats can be viewed and adopted by the general public. Every cat deserves a chance at getting a home. Every cat's personality, previous living conditions, and degree of socialization varies. We want to help as many cats as we can to live out their lives in the best environment possible - an environment that is suitable for their own temperament, personality and needs!

All of the cats for adoption have been examined by a veterinarian and have received a clean bill of health. All the cats for adoption that are of sterilization age/weight, are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, and are treated for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and worms.

Many of our cats are now being microchipped at the time of sterilization. We have free microchips available to adopters that adopt a cat that has not yet been microchipped. In certain circumstances a veterinary fee to insert the chip may apply. Microchipping is a foolproof method of relocating your pet should it become lost or stolen.

Please contact us for more information on adoption fees. Cats that are currently at veterinary facilities are available for visitation. We can help you make arrangements for visitation at the veterinary facilities and sometimes even arrange private in-home visits. We prefer to do in-home visits with cats that are currently in foster homes or that are being cared for by private rescuers. This process helps us to determine if the cat, the potential adopter, and any existing household pets would be a successful match. We want everyone to be happy and to remain together for life!

OUR THANKS

We have been lucky to have veterinarians that are actively involved in promoting spaying and neutering and being supportive of our organization. These veterinarians have repeatedly helped us to spay/neuter/vaccinate strays (either at no charge or at a very nominal fee).

Without the continued support in helping injured and homeless cats from these veterinarians, we could not continue to reduce the cat overpopulation. We would like to express our gratitude to these tireless veterinarians who so, unselfishly, donate their time and advice to us. You know who you are!
