About Our Shelter

Founded in 1979 by merging the Ramapo Animal Refuge of Oakland and the Bergen Animal Rescue of Teaneck, RBARI is Bergen County's only non-profit, "no-kill" shelter. We receive no government funding and rely on the generosity of our supporters.

At RBARI, we are dedicated to the welfare of companion animals in our community. We protect the abandoned, abused, and unwanted animals in our care by finding them kind and loving homes. We give our cats and dogs food, shelter, medical treatment, and, of course, love. The animals in our care receive an open-ended stay at a warm, safe place until they find loving homes.

RBARI operates with a dedicated full and part-time staff and a large number of volunteers, who help care for the animals, work in the office, and plan and carry out the organization's programs and fund-raising events.

We offer socialization and training that enables our animals to make an easier transition into family life. Our adoption process helps to ensure the "right" pet finds the "right" family.

Volunteering

The work that the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge accomplishes each year would not be possible without the help of our volunteers. We are thankful for each and every one of them! At RBARI we are always looking for new volunteers to help us care for our animals. Our animals just never seem to tire of getting attention ~so the more volunteers the happier they are!

Please take a look at what type of volunteer positions are available at RBARI and what you need to do to become a part of the RBARI team.

WE NEED HELP WITH THE FOLLOWING

Foster Families; For shy, sick, or needy dogs, cats, puppies & kittens
Office Help; Answering phones, handing out Matchmaking Forms etc.
Kennel Help; Cleaning cages, feeding, and socializing the dogs & cats
There are many Volunteer positions at RBARI that are just waiting to be filled. We are extremely thankful for all of our current volunteers and all of their hard work but we are always looking for more help

We are always in need of donations to help better care for our animals while they are staying with us. We receive many donations on a daily basis and we are thankful to everyone who has donated items to us. At this time we do have a few special requests in addition to our regular Wish List.

Dog Food ; Nutro Brand Dog food for any age. Also Nutro food for weight control and senior dogs.
Videos ; VHS tapes to play in our dog and cat kennels. i.e.. nature type videos, children's videos, Animal Planet, etc.
CDs ; Calming and relaxing music to play in our dog and cat kennels
Toys ; All brands and types of toys for dogs and cats
Cat Beds & Scratching Posts: All shapes, sizes & types

Here are a few things you should know if you are interested in becoming a RBARI volunteer:

All volunteer positions require training.
Volunteers that are interested in working directly with the animals must be at least 16 years of age.
Before you can start volunteering you must fill out an application form and attend an orientation. (Forms are available on line or at the shelter).
There are fostering and fundraising activities for younger volunteers

Dog Beds for our Kennels!!

We use Kuranda Dog Beds in all our dog kennels because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean. If you would like to donate a bed to us, click here.
