Our Featured Pets...

Sylvester is the name. I'm a big boy who came in when someone found me with a horrible wound on my neck. They think I may have been stuck in a car fan as part of my ear is missing also. But anyways I'm all healed now and am just waiting for someone to come out and pick me as their new cat. I'm got lots of spunk and love attention! I would be a great cat for any home as I get along with everyone I meet!

Let me tell you a little bit about Merlin. Merlin is a Black Lab mix that is pretty short and stocky. He loves to play tug-a-war but can sometimes get a little too excited while playing and not want to stop. Merlin will need work on that problem. He does well with other dogs and would love to go to a farm or a home with a large yard for him to play in. He is totally house broken and will sometimes sit when you ask him too. It seems like he had a home before he came here but no one ever came looking for him. He's been waiting for quite awhile for his new home and just wants to find one soon!

Events

Mark a Scenic Trail - JRHS Dog Walk
The James River Humane Society will be holding a dog walk on Saturday, August 9. Dogs and their owners are invited to enjoy a scenic walk 3.8 miles along the country road south of the Humane Society shelter. If you do not own a dog there are several dogs at the shelter who would enjoy becoming "your pet" for the walk. Cost is only $10.00 or $15.00 if you would like a t-shirt. Pre-registration is requested but not required. You may e-mail the shelter at: JamesRiverHumaneSociety@hotmail.com or call 320-1584 to reserve your spot.

The James River Humane Society is sponsoring four sessions for children ages 7-17 to learn about the care of cats and dogs. Participants will learn the proper way to approach animals, how to take care of kittens, cats, puppies and dogs, how to perform simple medical checks, learn how to hold and play with them. They will also learn the dollar and time cost involved in owning a pet and how to be responsible pet owners. If your family has a pet now, is considering acquiring a pet in the future, would like to become involved in volunteering at the Humane Society, or your child simply loves animals, we invite you to attend one of the four sessions available. Session cost is $10.00. Each session will run from 8:15 - 12:00. For more information, please contact Deb at 320-1584 or simply return the registration form.

August 23 – Shelter Volunteers Grill Out at the shelter at 11:00 a.m.

September 14 – Open House/Grill out at 11:30 a.m. at the shelter. Come see the many changes that have been made, take a look at our cats and dogs and enjoy a hamburger or hot dog along the way.

October 4 – Bake Sale at Buffalo Mall. Come support the shelter and enjoy the culinary delights that will be waiting for you.

For smooth air travel with your pet:
State your name for the record. Your pet should always wear a collar and identification tag that clearly states an address or phone number where you can be reached. Additionally, you should clearly put a current photograph on your pet’s carrier and clearly write the name, address, and telephone number of the person receiving him at your destination.
Handle with care. Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate—it should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably. These crates can be purchased from many pet supply stores as well as individual airlines. Also, write “Live Animal” in large letters on at least two sides of the crate, and use arrows to prominently indicate the upright position of the crate. HANDY TIP: Check with the airline to determine whether small animals can remain with you in the cabin.
Keep it short and direct. Decrease your pet’s chances of being left on a tarmac or outside during extreme weather conditions by booking a direct flight whenever possible. HANDY TIP: The night before you leave, freeze a small dish or tray of water for your pet. This way, it can’t spill during loading, and will melt by the time he or she’s thirsty.

For smooth road trips with your pet:
A seat for a King. Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. Again, make sure it’s large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. If your dog will be riding on the seat, outfit them with a harness and safety belt to keep them secure in case of sudden stops or changes in direction. Cats should ALWAYS be in a carrier. HANDY TIP: If you give your pet time to get used to the carrier beforehand, he or she will be much more comfortable traveling in it.
Keep them cool even when it’s hot. Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle! On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. And don’t forget about water! Bring along plenty of your own bottled water or tap water from home stored in plastic jugs. Drinking water they’re not used to could result in stomach upset for your pets.
California here I come! Bring along your pet’s rabies vaccination records, as some states requires this proof at certain interstate crossings. It’s always wise to make sure your pet has an ID collar with your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number, and any other relevant contact information

News

Monthly meetings are now held the first Thursday of the month at the Otter Tail Power Community Room at 7:00pm. Board members, volunteers, and members of the James River Humane Society are encouraged to attend.

Do you have an animal at home you would like to have spayed or neutered? The shelter has a limited supply of $20 coupons for families needing some help with altering their animals. For more information call the shelter or stop out and fill out a "Spay and Neuter application". Keeping in mind that for every one child born in the USA, there are 10 pets born. This means unwanted pets that have to be euthanized. Do your part to control the pet population....."Spay and Neuter".

The James River Humane Society offers the "ResQ pet tracking" Micro-chip service. This can be done on your newly adopted pet or an existing pet. The cost is a $25 donation for this service. Each additional pet is $20. It's a good idea to have this proceedure done, if the pet becomes lost and loses the collar it could be their ticket home as the chip provides vital information to get your pet returned. This proceedure has become a must since the hurricane disaster.

Who We Are

Established in 1985, we are a non-profit, no-kill shelter set up to care for homeless dogs and cats. It is the policy of our shelter to provide humane care and treatment for animals needing protection in the area served by the shelter; to seek to return lost animals to their owners; to seek suitable homes for animals without owners; and to alleviate animal suffering.

Adopting a friend

Our adoption program includes a spay/neuter requirement. Please spay/neuter your pet to make sure they do not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem and to ensure a better world for pets and humans.

To adopt an animal from our shelter you must fill out an adoption application form. You may fill one out at the shelter or contact the person listed on the animal's site. Adoption fee is $75. All pets are current on shots, spayed/neutered, deworming, have vet check ups, and cats are FIV tested before adoptions. No animals are permitted to leave the shelter before being spayed/neutered. If a second animal is being adopted, a discount will apply. After you have adopted, take your adoption papers into your nearest PETCO.
