Improving the Lives of Animals
In Rutherford County

We assisted in the spay/neuter of 470 cats and 98 dogs in 2006.We did this through a low income voucher program and our feral cat program.

The purpose of the Rutherford County Humane Society is to strengthen and protect the relationship between humans and companion animals and to foster the welfare of the dog and cat population of Rutherford County. Our number one goal is to promote and assist in spay/neuter to prevent the births and subsequent euthanasia of hundreds of unwanted animals. We also aim to prevent cruelty and abuse by active Humane Education.

 Our income is derived from donations, member dues, fundraisers, and grants. The organization is committed to promoting animal welfare and to assisting pet owners in being responsible and compassionate toward their companion animals. Since we began our low-income voucher program in 1996, we have assisted in the spay/neuter of approximately 6,000 animals. Even though we focus primarily on spay/neuter, we also do rescue/adoption of unwanted and owner released dogs and cats through our foster care programs. All animals in our care and custody receive all necessary veterinary services including spay/neuter prior to adoptive placement. When funds permit we assist with major medical pet surgeries of indigent pet owners. We have a very active feral and stray cat program through which we TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) cats to their location and then assist those people who need help buying food for the cats they feed. Many of these Rutherford County residents are elderly or indigent and yet they love the cats they feed and look forward to our “cat meals on wheels” visits.
