Who We Are
The Yancey County Animal Shelter is a non-profit public animal shelter located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, just 30 miles north of Asheville. We take all animals brought to us: strays, feral dogs, cats, and very limited personal pets. We provide a loving temporary home until they can be placed in a permanent home. We are not a "no kill" shelter, however, they do not have a time limit. We treat all animals as individuals and temperamant test them for adoptability. This way, no one slips through the system, and we know each and every personality in the house. So, if you are looking for a pet, we can help match you with the perfect friend who will fit your lifestyle.
We are located next to the Cane River Middle School, at 962 Cane River School Road, just west of town.
Our shelter hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12pm til 5pm, and on Saturday from 12pm til 4pm. Closed Sunday and Wednesday.

Adopting a Friend
Currently, our LOCAL (Yancey, Mitchell, and Madison Counties only) adoption fee is $65. Our OUT-OF-AREA adoption fee is $85 for dogs and cats. This fee includes worming, age appropriate vaccinations, micro-chipping, and basic spay/neuter costs. All animals will be spayed or neutered before going home.
NEW: You may now pay our adoption fee via PayPal. Just go back to our 'donation' area and pay via PayPal, specifying that the amount is for the adoption of a certain named animal. Include your name, address, and phone number. There is a $3.00 service fee added on to the adoption fee if you use PayPal.

Volunteering and Donations

GOOD NEWS! The Yancey County Commissioners reinstated partial funding to our Shelter. This allocation will be directed to supplement staff wages, liability insurance, and Worker's Compensation.
The Yancey County Animal Shelter is still funded almost entirely by community donations. From mail-in donations to store counter "doggie banks", every penny goes to the welfare of these animals. We, also, accept donations to memorialize a lost pet or favorite animal lover. Donations make great gifts for the animal lovers in your life. At the shelter we have a pet store where you can create goodie bags for your favorite pooch or kitty, with all proceeds helping their furry friends.
SHELTER NEWS:
Spring is here and it's time to get those New Year resolutions in gear! All of us here hope this coming year will be the best ever! Perhaps a new pet is in your plans...come see us as we can match the right one with you. Upcoming events: Save your gently used "stuff" for the Fall Flea, we will be happy to take it. Call the shelter for more information.
We are always looking for volunteers. Volunteers can work in the shelter facility, or help away from the shelter. Just call!
We accept donations of cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and paper goods. Any food donated will be used for the "Meals on Wheels" program. We are now participating in Hill's Science Diet "Shelter Nutrition Program" so we can not use other brands for our pets here at the shelter.
SEAMSTRESSES are ALWAYS needed to sew dog pads (the fabric is donated and at the shelter for pick up). Please, let us know if you can lend a hand!
