Saturday, November 22 our volunteers will be going to the shelter at 11 in the morning and staying until every dog is thoroughly exercised, adored, treated and happily exhausted. We hope you will join us, dear readers. This last Saturday, November 15, was a beautiful, blessed day for all the dogs and volunteers. 7 volunteers showed up, enough to walk all the dogs, all at the same time. The shelter is housing 5 special dogs on our site. Please take note of them under their names Opal, Chloe, Kirby, Daisy and Riley. This was one of the best days ever because all dogs got to be walked, just like Cesar Milan does. Cesar is the Dog Whisperer who knows all about dogs and how to train them and correct any problems in the family-canine relationship. He can be seen on the National Geographic Channel. So here we were all 5 dogs with 7 volunteers just appreciating the beautiful leaves in their colorful splendor, the great treats, the great fun. Getting to walk all in a line was good for socialization as well as well-being. Come and join us again next Saturday or anyday between. Sunday, October 26th, we had Zeke, Maybelle's puppies, Tucker, Lucky and Colby many of our animals at Octoberfest at Cornerstone Church in Pearl from 4:00 until 7:00. Thiswas a fun festival for the whole family and a great opportunity for you to grow your family a bit by adding a new pet. Everyone had a fun time walking the larger dogs and hugging the puppies. We will need some help at these events so that we can take more dogs. If you can help out, just email us at jxnfriends@yahoo.com or give April a call at 601-209-4186. The more, the merrier! Meanwhile at the shelter, Choco Lot got a new home in Hammond, Louisiana. Dew Drop has possibly been adopted. Opal, Kirby, Juliet, Flo, the collie/terrier with the bobbed tail and others are hoping to be adopted out of the shelter, too.
In addition to the animals at the shelter, you will see there are plenty of fine dogs in foster care that are in desperate need of forever homes. Nancy Rothe has any dog you could hope for at her home. She always makes sure that they are all up to date on vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm treatment, socialization, and all the best that a dog lover can provide. Please get in touch with her at 601-825-4798 or email her at ngrothe@bellsouth.net. Or you can call Cathy McMillan at 601-354-3622 for more info about Mabel and the Maybellenes and Sissy who were put on petfinder from that clinic as a courtesy to our friends at Animal Medical Center.
The good news for our friends and readers is that the shelter is now open at least from 11 to 2 every Saturday and the Volunteers will be there to meet and greet and boast about the adoptables. Quite a few cats and kittens are there now, too.
We have volunteers who keep this site updated daily. However, sometimes adoptions take place at the shelter that we don't know about for several days. If you are interested in a dog or cat that is listed as being at the shelter, you may want to call the shelter at 601.960.1775 or you can email the volunteers at jxnfriends@yahoo.com and we will get the latest update since our last entries.
The shelter is located at 140 Outer Circle in Jackson, which is off Woodrow Wilson near Hawkins Field . You drive down Woodrow Wilson until you see the sign for George Kurtz Gymnasium, then you turn right on Gymnasium Road, then look for Outer Circle and turn right. Follow that road across the railroad tracks and turn right into the parking lot of the new shelter. We love this new facility because we sweated our selves out to get it, the city approved it, and the dogs and cats and whatever else shows up there (horses, goats, snakes, emus) have a climate controlled environment with enthusiastic attendants catering to these animals needs.
We desperatly need more volunteers who would like to do what we do: walk the dogs at the pound, help find homes, educate the public about our spay/neuter programs, get the cats to Petsmart, clean the cat cages at Petsmart. We need people who want to become proactive in the community as volunteers in our organization. We need people who are fearless about asking for monies for our adoption programs and city shelter needs and are not afraid to throw their selves amidst the eternal needs of homeless pets. If you would like to volunteer, please email us a jxnfriends@yahoo.com.
If you'd like to be pet person just for a little while as we try to find homes for the homeless you can be a foster parent. Fostering a dog or cat is a wonderful way to teach children how to help those in need and how to be responsible for the life of another living being. Also, to those of you who have just one dog and you fear that they are lonely while you are at work all day, nothing keeps your beloved lonely one company like a thankful and willing foster dog. Call Lyn Crawford at 601.405.2437 if you would like to help or send us an email to jxnfriends@yahoo.com.
All city shelter dogs and cats are spay/neuterable through our fine program with Jackson Friends and various vets in town. One of our newest vets, so generous with her time to our cause is Dr. Angela Peterson at Animal Health Center in Madison, Ms. Also, Dr. Dana Ford has been offering her skills to this cause as her new practice at Canton Road Veterinary Hospital grows by leaps and bounds in the northeast Jackson, Ms, area. Mr. Michael Randall at the Randall Veterinary Clinic (Byram, Ms) has committed quite a bit of his time to our spay/neuter program. He introduces each of our rescues to all of the other dogs and cats at his clinic and assesses each rescue as to adoptability and temperament. Some of our longtime participating vets are Dr. Troy Majure and his rotating staff of wonderful vets at AMC (Animal Medical Center) and one of our long-standing clinics donating their time and talent to Jackson Friends is North State Animal Hospital. Two of our newest are Oakdale Vet Clinic and Forest Hill Vet Clinic. I just met Dr. Jonathan Mitchell (with Forest Hill) . A very positive guy with a fine vet clinic. Also , All Creatures Great and Small in Madison has continued to be most generous with their time and talents with our program for quite a while. Dr. Glenn with the Hinds Community College Vet Tech program which spays and neuters our pets during the academic year. The person to call for spay/neuter for pound pets is Greg Rothe at 601-825-4798. We thank these vets for everything they have done for these many years for this community and applaud their loyalty to this fine program. We also highly recommend them for your other pets, too.
