Who We Are

Angels In Distress, Inc. located in the South Kansas City, Grandview, Belton, Raymore areas is an organization of caring individuals devoted to the rescue and re-homing of small purebred and mixed-breed dogs. We accept dogs in need from shelters, other rescuers, veterinarians, breeder releases, and individuals giving up their pets for a variety of reasons and house them in loving foster homes. Our "Angels in distress" are examined and treated by our veterinarians, vaccinated, de-wormed, heartworm tested, examined and treated for parasites, fecal checked, dental exam and teeth cleaned, spayed or neutered, treated with Frontline Plus, given maintenance heartworm preventative (Heartguard), bathed and groomed, and micro chipped before placement. They are also thoroughly temperament assessed. We believe that, somewhere, there is a home for every dog, but that we have a responsibility to place our dogs into homes that will best meet their needs, both physically and emotionally. We look for people with patience and loving hearts, and an understanding of the furbaby mind.

Adopting a friend

We welcome your inquiries. Potential adopters are asked to complete an application, which includes personal information, personal and veterinarian references, and questions which will help us to determine which pet will fit best into your home and family. We are looking for homes which understand that adopting a pet is a 10 to 15 year commitment to love and care for this little being and all his/her needs. Please Email us for an adoption application. Please understand that our mission is to promote lifelong happiness for our dogs and their adoptive families. Therefore, "first come, first serve" is not always the outcome. Our foster homes know first-hand what special needs each dog has, and may not feel that a match between a potential adoptive family and a particular dog will provide for everyone's long-term enjoyment. If you are approved, we will do everything possible to find the best placement for your family.

You are applying to adopt a rescued dog, who needs a forever home.

Adopting a rescue dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life. Rescued dogs are often the most loyal companions and very loving. But like any strong, healthy relationship, developing a strong relationship with your rescue dog requires work and commitment.

Some of these dogs have suffered abandonment, neglect and sometimes abuse. They require a patient, caring and committed home to help them adjust to their new environment. Some dogs may suffer from separation anxiety and bark or cry when left alone. This can last for several days or longer. We ask that you be willing to work with the dog for a minimum of 30 days.
In addition, some dogs may require help in housebreaking again. When a dog is brought to a new home, he will need time to adjust and get acclimated to his new surroundings and schedule. He/she may have accidents during this period.
During the transition period, we will be available during normal business hours to offer suggestions and assist you with any problems you may have with your new family member. In the event of an emergency, please contact us immediately. If you do not reach us right away, we will return your call as soon as possible if you specify that it is an emergency.

Can't Adopt One Of Our Dogs, But You Still Want To Help? Here's What You Can Do:

1) Probably one of the best things you can do to help our dogs is to let other people know about us. Tell them they can get to this page simply by going to: http://www.angelsindistress.petfinder.com That will bring them directly to this page. Then, they can look at our dogs at their leisure.

2) If you see a pet you think may be of interest to a friend or co-worker, print out that dog's description page. Give it to your friend. Or post it at work. Or email the dog's profile directly to the person. Lots of wonderful people post flyers at work and help us spread the word...and find great homes.

3) DONATE, DONATE, DONATE. We can use your time, your money, your dog toys/food/supplies or just about anything else you'd be kind enough to give us. Not sure what we need? Just ask. We're always happy to talk about that!

If you would like to be a Guardian Angel and sponsor a pet or send a donation in memory of a loved one (pet or human), we would greatly appreciate your donations as all the funds we receive through your generosity go towards helping save more homeless animals.

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED

We have an urgent need for foster homes. We do not operate a shelter or have any formal facility. All our rescue pups are in private approved foster homes throughout the Four State Area. We don't take the furbabies to a pet store on Saturdays to be adopted. We save our foster furbabies from shelters or they are given to us by previous owners who can no longer care for their furbaby. We then screen the foster baby while in our homes for any behavior problems such as food agression, dog or cat agression, housebreaking issues, etc. One of the jobs of the foster parent is to work with the furbaby and help them adjust to living in a loving home where they have free run of the house. Our favorite part of the job is to just love and adore the foster furbaby and spoil them rotten. We do reap the benefits of watching that scared little furbaby adjust and blossom into a sweet affectionate pup who loves to play and cuddle as they were meant to do. If you are interested in fostering for Angels In Distress, Inc., please Email us and request a Foster Home Application.

~ TRAINING IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR DOG ~

Training can be the difference between a "good" dog and a "bad" dog. Dogs are just like children - they need love, security and guidance. They do NOT raise themselves and instinctively know NOT to chew the couch or your favorite slippers! They have to be trained in a loving manner to exhibit appropriate behavior. Even though it will take effort on your part, you will be amazed at the results consistent training will bring. Don't forget, your dog is learning all the time, whether you are teaching or not determines "what" he is learning.

-- Train and keep your dog. He is counting on you. His life depends on it, DON'T BLOW IT!

"There is no faith which has never yet been broken, except that of a truly faithful dog." - Kondrad Z. Lorenz

"Look into my eyes and deny it. No human could love you as much as I could."

LOVE: Is the feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you're lucky, a human will love you in return." ~ Canine Connections ~

"Guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs for the deaf, dog companions for those that live alone...Dogs who comfort the sick and elderly and befriend lonely children. All over the world there are hundreds of thousands of these faithful animals serving us with their love." ~ J.R.E. ~

A DOG'S SOUL

Every dog must have a soul
Somewhere deep inside
Where all his hurts and grievances
Are buried with his pride
Where he decides the good and bad
The wrong way from the right
And where his judgment carefully
Is hidden from our sight
A dog must have a secret place
Where every thought abides
A sort of close acquaintance that
He trusts in and confides
And when accused unjustly for
Himself he cannot speak
Rebuked he finds within his soul
The comfort he must seek
He'll love, though he is unloved
And he'll serve though badly used
And one kind word will wipe away
The times when he's abused
Although his heart may break in two
His love will still be whole
Because God gave to every dog
An understanding soul.

Please speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. If you see an animal in need and don't know what to do, call your local Animal Control. If you don't know their number - call your police!

~ "... people who keep dogs (or cats, for that matter) live longer on average than those who do not. This is not some kind of pro-canine campaigning fantasy. It is a simple medical fact that the calming influence of the company of a friendly pet animal reduces blood pressure and therefore the risk of a heart attack." ~ Desmond Morris ~

"A dog has one aim in life. To bestow his heart." ~ J. R. Ackerley ~

10 COMMANDMENTS FOR A PET OWNER:

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends and your entertainment - I HAVE ONLY YOU!
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'LL NEVER forget it.
7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush bones in your hand but I CHOOSE not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been out in the sun/cold too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say "I can't bear to watch it" or "Let it happen in my absence". Everything is easier for ME if you are there - Remember, I LOVE YOU!

~ Spay and neuter your pets. It is the only way we can prevent the mass euthanasia of homeless animals. For every puppy/kitten that is born, it is one less animal that will be adopted from a shelter. ~ Look at our Pet List. Every animal on it was "dumped" by their owners. When you own an animal it is a lifetime commitment. Cherish them. No human will ever love you more.
