The Independence Animal Services is holding their ongoing DART (Disaster Animal Response Team) Meetings. The next meeting will be Jan 16th at the Independence Fire Station #1.
During emergencies such as hurricanes, fires and floods, DART volunteers play a critical role in assisting people and their pets. These volunteers are trained in rescue methods, evacuation procedures and safe placement for animals. DART volunteers are required to complete a specialized training program and must be available to help on short notice.
Time commitment: Announced meetings and as needed during emergencies
We would like to remind potential volunteers that at this time there is an open enrollment policy for our DART Team, as we grow. Disaster training can be started at any time during our regular scheduled meetings. Any meetings that have been missed by new recruits will receive past materials, and brought up to pace as we continue our training. Training will also include mock disaster exercises.
For more information about DART call 816-325-7211 ask for Carol or e-mail at cleibold@indepmo.org or go to www.readytohelp.org for more information on other ways to help and the application.
Just call and ask, us how YOU can help. The Animals needs will change daily! SO give us a call.
Please be a responsible pet owner:
First and foremost, have your pet spayed or neutered. An unneutered/unspayed pet will stray/jump fences, be difficult to train, can become aggressive and may eventually become a liability.
Keep your dogs on leashes when going for walks and see that they stay contained in the house or a fenced yard when away.
Always keep your cats indoors.
Working at the shelter takes a very special type of volunteer, and not everyone can honestly be a hands-on type of volunteer, but every one of us has a talent, which can be used. You will find that your talents can be offered and appreciated at the shelter. Are you a skilled professional in a specific area that would like to lend us a helping hand? Do you love animals, and realize that there is a way to help our city animals, while temporarily staying with us, until we can find that special family that will give them a loving safe home? Not all of our available volunteer desires, need to be done at the shelter. Here is a list of many positions that could use your skills:
- Adoptions (be a Matchmaker)
- Dog Walkers (Very important to give the dog?s exercise)
- Cat Cuddler
- Computer Skills
- Donation Drives (Great for a School or class Porject)
- Fundraising
- Greeter (welcome potential adoptive families and give them
information)
- Groomers
- Telephone Communication skills
- Office help
