All adoptions are first come first serve the day the animal is available. We do not have an application process, so all adoptions are done here at the shelter. At this time we do not hold animals for individuals. If two or more individuals express an interest in the same animal at the same time there will be a silent bid.

Adoption Fee:
Our adoption fee for puppies and dogs is $100. This includes their spay/neuter surgery, first set of vaccinations (including Bordetella and rabies), a Heartworm check (6months and older), and deworming.

Our adoption fee for kittens and cats is $65. This includes their spay/neuter surgery, first set of vaccinations, and feline leukemia test.

All of our animals MUST be spayed or neutered before going to their new home. Upon completion of your adoption process your new pet will be transported to our contracted veterinary clinic where the animal will receive the above veterinary services.

You will be provided a pick up date and will pick up your new pet from the veterinary clinic where the veterinarian and staff will provide you information on post care instructions for you pet, provide a complimentary exam and consultation and answer any questions you may have about your pet to ensure your pet lives a long and healthy life.

This means that you will be picking up the animal a few days after you adopt them, depending on our veterinarian's schedule. We do have animals that are already spayed or neutered when they arrive at our shelter. If you choose one of those animals, then the animal may be able to go home with you that day, after a visit with our vet team. We have a little fenced-in area where you can interact with the animal that you are considering. Please don't hesitate to ask a staff member if they can escort you and the animal to this area. Only those that are available for adoption can be taken out.

Kansas City ordinance Chapter 14-20 requires that all residents license their dog, cat or ferret. Having your pet spayed or neutered will lower your cost for their license. The license fee is $10.00 for a spayed or neutered animal and $33.00 for animals which have not been altered. Pet license fees help fund animal control activities in Kansas City and support shelter operations.

To obtain a license for your pet, you must provide proof of a current rabies vaccination. Pet licenses can be purchased at Animal Health & Public Safety, located at 4400 Raytown Road, through some local veterinarians , or online at www.petdata.com.

Licensing your animal, and keeping the license on your animal's collar, insures that you will be notified if Animal Control impounds your animal. In addition, any city resident who finds a lost animal can contact Animal Health & Public Safety at 513-9800 and get the owner's information so they can return the animal to its rightful owner. In other words, if someone in your neighborhood finds your pet they can contact Kansas City Animal Health & Public Safety, or check www.petdata.com. , and obtain your name and address and return your pet to you. Animal Health & Public Safety in Kansas City partners with area animal care and welfare organizations to better serve the community and the animal population. Through these partnerships, we promote responsible pet ownership, encourage spaying and neutering of pets, and provide safe shelter for lost, abandoned and unwanted animals.

Did you know that you can help prevent the death of unwanted animals by spaying or neutering your pet? Many people love puppies and kittens, but some pet owners lose interest when their animals grow up. As a result, each year thousands of unwanted cats and dogs are euthanized annually or suffer as strays.

Click here for a myth-busting document about spaying/neutering. Help save a life, please spay or neuter your pet.
