A Very Special Dog . . .
Koda may be a Husky-mix, but he is all Husky at heart. He loves to hunt and always has his nose to the ground or in the air in search of prey. He likes to find a spot that is higher than the rest of the yard. That way, he can always keep a watchful eye. His chosen spot is the picnic table atop his fosters’ deck overlooking the yard as well as their neighbor’s. Seemingly aloof and rather stand-offish (another Husky trait), Koda, or “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” is very sweet and always in the mood for a good tummy rub and ear scratching. He’s very good with everyone from little children to adults. He also seems to do best with small dogs and little puppies. Larger dogs appear to upset him, causing some aggressive behavior. Koda’s very good on a leash and adores long walks. He seems to know his basic commands (sit, lay down, shake etc.). His fosters are working hard on manners and getting him to better respond to his name. (Koda was a stray, so “Koda” is not his original name.) He is totally house broken, likes to be brushed and doesn’t seem to mind a bath. Given the opportunity, Koda will run. And run. And run. He’s fast, agile and has been seen jumping 15 to 20 feet off a seven-foot wall at full speed without missing a beat. Because of this, Koda will require a big backyard with a very secure fence. He may even need kenneling when left alone. Obedience training is also a must. Experience with the Husky breed would be helpful. Koda is definitely not a good “first dog” choice. But with a lot of understanding, structure and exercise, he’ll make a great and loveable companion.

A Very Special Cat. . .
Missy is sweet and loving, and she's looking for a special home. Missy has crossed eyes that limit her field of vision for toy playing - she likes them up close to her so needs you to get out that fishing pole toy and swing it in her direction. She is in a foster home with no other pets and cruised around the home when first taken there. She tends to be a horizontal girl, not one to jump up on things, perhaps because she has trouble with depth perception. After some extensive dental work, she's healing and getting back to normal in her foster home. Missy would like to be an only cat. You can learn more about Missy on her bio page (and see more photos!) |
We hold public adoption events on weekends. The foster home volunteers bring the pets to these events and potential adopters have a chance to meet the animals and talk with the foster families. If a good match is found, the pet can be adopted that day. The schedule of upcoming adoption events is listed below.
It is also possible to meet and adopt pets at other times. Our foster homes are always willing to talk with and arrange for potential adopters to meet the animal they are fostering. Again, contact us via the e-mail addresses listed below or by phone.
Pet Haven reserves the right to refuse any adoption we do not feel is appropriate.
DOGS
Our dog adoption events are held from 10am to 12 pm on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Our adoption event on Setember 6th will be held at the Woodbury Petco, 7040 Valley Creek Plz, Woodbury, Mn, 651-739-9122. The September 20th adoption event will be at the Richfield Petco, located at 66th St and Lyndale Ave S.
CATS
Pet Haven's next cat adoption will be on Sun. Sept. 21 from 1-3 p.m. at the PetCo in Richfield at 66th and Lyndale Ave. S. We're specializing in black cats and kittens this year and have lots of winners! We have many young, attractive, diverse personalitied cats. We have chubby cats, trim cats, lazy cats and busy cats and older kittens! Nick is a good all round fellow who enjoys children and adults and loves to have someone around to pay attention to. Missy is looking for a home without other pets to startle her because her vision appears to be limited or maybe she just wants to be an only girl! Telly is a handsome, bigger fellow, front paw declawed, and would like to be an only cat in your home. Kelly is 6 months old almost and just a petite little girl - she loves another kitten or cat to play with. Snickers is another big fellow, front paw declawed who can pick on another cat and we think he'd love your undivided attention. Some would love to be only cats and others cats need another feline or canine in their lives to help them keep busy. Our cats and kittens have tested negative for feline leukemia and fiv, are up to date on distemper and rabies (if old enough) and have been microchipped and spayed /neutered. The adoption fee ranges from $130.00 - $150.00. Please come at the beginning of an adoption event if there is a specific cat you are hoping to meet. Email inquiries and home adoptions always welcome!
Foster Homes Needed... All of the dogs and cats in Pet Haven's adoption program stay in volunteer foster homes until permanent homes are found for them. We currently are turning away needy cats and dogs because our foster homes are full. Pet Haven provides all vet care, food, supplies and lots of support. It is Pet Haven's responsibility to find a suitable new home for the animal you foster. We've been doing it for over 50 years, so you can count on us. If you are interested in providing temporary care for a cat or dog, please contact us at pethavencats@yahoo.com to foster a cat, a pethavendogs@yahoo.com to foster a dog or call and leave a voicemail message at (952)831-3825.
We would like you to commit to fostering for a 6 month period of time. Pet Haven has experienced volunteers available to help you and answer any questions you have as you care for the foster animal. If you wish to foster cats, we can place a cat in your home that has already been in another foster home so that you will know what to expect from the pet you would receive. If you wish to foster dogs, we can fit the size, age and energy level of your foster dog to match your lifestyle and home situation.
Every cat and dog is checked by a veterinarian before it is placed in your home for fostering. Cats receive a feline leukemia/fiv test so we know the animal is not infectious. Both cats and dogs receive distemper and rabies vaccinations and are spayed or neutered, treated for fleas and earmites and are dewormed and microchipped. Dogs also receive heartworm tests and treatment if needed. Both cats and dogs are treated for any other ailments uncovered during the vet's examination. Pet Haven provides excellent vet care to all of the animals in our adoption program.
What do we need from you? We need the love in your heart to care for the cat or dog until it finds a forever home. We need you to have a safe indoor place to house the foster dog or cat. Dogs also need a fenced yard, an area for a tie-out, or leash walks. Cats need a room to stay in. Some foster homes fully integrate their foster cat into their home, others choose to keep it in a room and visit for play and loving sessions daily. Once the animal is ready to be placed in a new home, we need you to bring your foster animal to our twice monthly adoption events or partner with another volunteer who can transport your foster dog or cat to the adoption events. We also need you to occasionally be available to meet with potential adopters (accompanied by an experienced Pet Haven volunteer) at other times by appointment.
Every new foster home worries that it will be too hard to give up the animal once they have cared for it and fallen in love. This fear keeps many from volunteering at all. It is hard - even those who have fostered for many years have a hard time with that. But, Pet Haven gives you a say in choosing the new home for the animal because we know you have a personal interest in the well-being of your foster cat or dog. Meeting the new family and knowing where the foster animal is going helps to make it easier to give them up. Besides, once your foster pet has found a new home, we can fill the hole they left with a new foster dog or cat and you then move on to helping another homeless companion. Please don't let this concern stop you from helping the animals who need you to volunteer. You CAN do it!
If you are unable to foster, could you broadcast our need to your friends, family and co-workers?
Volunteers Needed... Want to help homeless pets, but being a foster home is not up your alley? You can help in other ways. Please contact us at Volunteer@PetHavenMN.org or leave a message at (952)831-3825 to volunteer. Thanks!
Thanks!
