Hiawatha Animal Humane Society
Our Featured Pet...
Please click on the adoptable pet list above. Because all our animals are very special to us, how could we single out just one to feature? We also feature our adoptable friends in weekly newspapers in the area. Would you like to sponsor a "Pet of the Week" feature? If so, please contact hiawathaanimal@hotmail.com for more information on getting your name and sponsorship in the local newspapers. This has been very popular for area businesses and individuals wishing to honor or dedicate a memorial to their special friend(s).
News
We meet the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 P.M. in the Lake City Public Library. The library is located on the corner of West Center Street and High Street. Members and non-members are encouraged to come share their time with others who advocate responsible animal ownership and take measures to help those in need. The area we cover in includes Lake City, City of Wabasha and City of Kellogg and their immediate surrounding area. Our board members and general membership represent these areas. If you would like to see your community become more involved with us, we encourage your memberships and participation on the board to do so.
Who We Are
The Hiawatha Animal Humane Society was established in 1971. For many years it consisted of a small group of dedicated members who met yearly or as needed. When money was available, spay/neuter rebates were offered at local veterinary offices. In 2004, with the support of this board, many who were original founding members, a major reorganization took place. A new board (11 members strong) is now in place and we boast of a very active organization of over 75 members (and growing). Our programs include animal adoptions, spay/neuter rebates, donations of pet food to area food shelves, veterinary care for animals in need, foster home expenses, feral cat control, special needs animals, among others. These programs cost us money. We fund our programs through memberhships, adoption fees, and outright donations. One of our mainstay fundraisers is the collection of used cell phones and empty printer cartridges (large and small, all makes and models). These items can be dropped off at Gerken's Town and Country in Lake City, Scheel's Super Valu in Wabasha, or Gerken's Town and Country in Wabasha.
Adopting a friend
Our adoption costs are $50. All animals of spay/neuter age are altered before leaving our care. We always recommend spaying/neutering of animals you adopt. Rebates are available for Wabasha County (Minnesota) residents at participating Wabasha County veterinary clinics when you spay/neuter your pet. Ask your veterinarian for more details.
Come Visit Us!
We have no shelter for you to visit. We are very proud of the fact that without a shelter we are able to place animals in forever loving homes. We have a bulletin board with pictures of animals needing homes at Gerken's Town and Country in Lake City, 801 W. Lyon Ave. We are also fortunate to have the support of local newspapers to run our Pet of the Week feature. Please pick up a copy of the Wabasha County Herald or Lake City Graphic to see pictures and descriptions of current animals needing homes. We have a large network of people and businesses working with us to find homes for the large numbers of animals in need. These include local veterinary clinics and pet related stores. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF WHAT WE DO.
