Announcement
This notice is to announce that Michele Tjaden of Inver Grove, MN has accepted the position as our new Adoption Coordinator. This role has long been held by Regi Goodhall, co-founder of Peke N Chin Midwest. After several discussions, Michele has agreed to take over this important function with Christy Johnson at her side to assist with screening applicants and setting up home visits. Michele runs a dog haven in her home for special needs rescue dogs that are either seniors, handicapped, or have a chronic illness. In addition, Michele continues to take in fosters whenever space is available and time allows.
Michele has a wealth of rescue experience having volunteered full time with a small breed dog rescue group in California. She has also worked with dogs in some capacity or another for 30 plus years (20 of them as a veterinary technician).
We congratulate Michele on this challenging but rewarding role, and are thrilled to have her as an integral part of Peke N Chin Midwest.
News
We are seeing more owner-surrendered dogs because people can no longer care for them. I thank these people for making the first move to help their dogs on to a new live with a loving family by bringing them to us.
The assistance in providing the necessary medical treatments for many of these dogs come from our adoption fees and donations from generous donors. We are now using more of our rescue dollars on the long-term care of our Forever Fosters – we have made a commitment to them that we intend to keep. They will finish their lives in warm loving homes with caring people.
- Pet Surrendering: Behavior problems account for the leading cause of owner relinquishment of pets and resulting euthanasia - we all know it and numerous studies confirm it. Often pet parents just need some help in dealing with the issues they are facing.
Petvideo.com, created by the founders of Petfinder.com and Petsincredible, provides free online training clips.
We encourage our visitors and adopters to visit this site to view the same positive, reward-based training advice

Our History
Peke N Chin Midwest was founded after a need was realized here in the State of Minnesota and surrounding states. This was discovered by accident. Heidi Ludwig was attending a dog auction in Wheaton, Missouri in hopes of rescuing some Japanese Chins and getting them out of the cycle of puppy mill abuse for a National Japanese Chin rescue group.
The Chins never showed up; however, a friend that she met there told her that there were some old Pekes that someone had put into the auction. The lone male, renamed Merlin, came with Heidi to MN. She had the intention of turning him over to Pekingese Rescue. Well, to her surprise she realized when she got home that there is no Peke rescue in Minnesota.
Merlin went on to get completely vetted and placed in a loving home with two people who absolutely worship him. Regi Goodhall was introduced to Heidi when she offered to foster a local Peke until a forever home could be found. An adoption was pending but Heidi had also called and the two got together.
Since this time, both Regi and Heidi have applied for and become associated with the Pekingese Club of America and their rescue program. Both Pekingese Club of America and Peke N Chin Midwest are non-profit organizations. Donations are accepted and very much appreciated.
All adoption donations go to helping to cover medical expenses for our rescued friends.
Due to the success and expansion of Peke N Chin Midwest our rescue efforts takes us all over the midwest area. We have volunteers located in the State of Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Montana and the Province of Manitoba in Canada.
- The Founders: Heidi Ludwig is currently owned by 4 Japanese Chins and a Shih Tzu. She also fosters for 2 other Japanese Chin rescue groups as well as for PNC Midwest.
She has been in rescue for 6 years now and is a Regional Representative for Chin Rescue as well as Peke Rescue. She is passionate about the need for rescue and education and is more than happy to answer any questions you might have about the specific breeds or rescue in general.
Regina Goodhall owns a two year old rescue Tibetan Spaniel, a 5 year old Pekingese, a 9 year old Sheltie/Spitz mix, an 8 year old Affenpinscher and a 2 year old Snowshoe/Siamese cat. She currently volunteers for Peke N Chin as the Transport Coordinator and Treasurer.
Adopting a Friend
The purpose of our rescue to is find good permanent "forever" homes for each of the dogs entrusted to us. That means an extensive screening to insure a good match between a dog and their adopter.
We send out an adoption application to find out more about you, your situation, and your expectations. Hopefully you'll be a good match for the dog you are interested in. We check with your vet to confirm your desire to keep your pet healthy and your environment safe with preventive care in the form of vaccinations. A home visit helps check out any unexpected circumstances that might interfere with a good match. A donation from you is used to pay for medical expenses for current and future dogs. We are a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. Finally we have you sign an adoption contract. If all has gone well, we work with you to get the you and your new pet together.
If, after all our efforts and yours, an adoption doesn't work out we ask that the dog be returned to us and we confirm that we will take the dog back providing a cushion for both. We want successful adoptions!
- Senior Dogs: Have you given thought to adopting an older or senior dog? These friends need you so much more than you can imagine.
They come to you trained, past the puppy chewing stage, past so many other stages, and are so very grateful for the love you share with them.
Please visit The Senior Dogs Project to learn how rewarding it is to bring a senior dog into your life.
They deserve a family - no matter their age.
